Men like casual sex more than women – scientific fact

Steve Connor | The Guardian

It is now a truth acknowledged even by science: men like casual sex more than women do.

One of the first academic studies to investigate positive and negative emotions felt after casual sex has revealed that evolution has not adapted women to having casual sex. Otherwise, they conclude, women would feel better about a one-night sexual partner, instead of feeling "used" and regretful.

Men are biologically capable of reproduction with many women, which may explain their apparent happiness with casual relationships. But for women it is quality, not quantity that is important, said Professor Campbell.

"Recently, biologists have suggested that females could benefit from mating with many men – it would increase the genetic diversity of their children and, if a high-quality man would not stay with them, they might at least get his excellent genes for that child," she said

Well alrighty then, be a slut and have smart kids

Tina June 26, 2008 - 7:12am

And good luck with continuing to get help paying for those diverse kids!

(Oh - I forgot - the children of a wife are legally the children of the husband - biological paternity be damned...)

Still, though, I love it when science proves what we all know. Makes the world a cozier place.

It is one of the world's most persistent myths: that one in 10 children are illegitimate without their legal fathers knowing that they have been cuckolded. Now scientists believe they have arrived at the real figure. One in 25.

Scientists analysed the Y chromosomes of 1,600 unrelated men with 40 surnames to test the idea that there could be a link between the Y chromosome and surnames, which are both passed on to boys down the male line.

For certain, uncommon surnames there was a clear association between the unique genetic markers carried on the Y chromosome with the surname, suggesting that many of the men sharing the same surname had a common male ancestor many centuries ago.

This also enabled the scientists to estimate the probability of illegitimacy among the men carrying the same surname and found that it came out at between 1 and 4 per cent.

They sicken of the calm, who knew the storm.

Um . . . maybe women would feel better about a one night frolic if there weren't such intense social disapproval of same?

lynette June 26, 2008 - 9:29pm

yeesh... studies like this are a dime a dozen... and worth even less.

Sure, there's a genetic basis for promiscuous men, and nesting women. But guess what? That only holds water if every time you have sex, your goal is to bear a child.

If you use birth control, you've evolved beyond your genes...

Ah, but the women who do like casual sex are much more promiscuous than the men. The numbers sort of demand it. So I think it works out well for women, those who don't want it don't get it, those who do, get a ton of it.

Seven Kinds Of Sex
The 1st kind of sex is called: Smurf Sex.
This kind of sex happens when you first meet someone and you both have sex until you are blue in the face.

The 2nd kind of sex is called: Kitchen Sex.
This is when you have been with your partner for a short time and you are so horny you will have sex anywhere, even in the kitchen.

The 3rd kind of sex is called: Bedroom Sex.
This is when you have been with your partner for a long time. Your sex has gotten routine and you usually have sex only in your bedroom.

The 4th kind of sex is called: Hallway Sex.
This is when you have been with your partner for too long. When you pass each other in the hallway you both say " f... you."

The 5th kind of sex is called: Religious Sex.
Which means you get Nun in the morning, Nun in the Afternoon and Nun at night. (Very Popular)

The 6th kind of sex is called: Courtroom Sex.
This is when you cannot stand your spouse any more. They take you to court and screw you in front of everyone.

And last, but not least,

The 7th kind of sex is called: Social Security Sex. You get a little each month. But not enough to live on.

of ancestry? Only women pass mitochondria DNA! Men don’t pass that information with their gene pool! So if you really, really want to know your origins, you should search using your material ancestry as evidence of your origins!

What a hoot that modern civilizations based the evidence on paternal ancestry when there is no proof! Typical male thinking!

And don't aboriginal tribes trace theirs through the maternal line? Perhaps they were wiser than given credit for? At least members of those tribes can definitely trace theirs with scientific evidence. Do we really know for certain whom are fathers were or what their origins were???? :-) Just because some of them put their names on the dotted line, doesn't mean it was 'THEIR sperm that helped to create US'

From the article, it appears males do prefer 'casual sex.' Women for obvious reasons prefer marriage and I don't believe it's because it gives them an opportunity to indulge in what males do. Apparently females can be held accountable whereas males scientifically cannot!

As my teenage daughter said, "Getting pregnant out of marriage is like being grounded for 18 years"

Synoia June 27, 2008 - 5:55am

Then you can trace your lineage back many, many generations via the Y chromosome. There's a Y-chromosomal Adam as well as a Mitochondrial Eve.

If you're only looking back one generation, then since the child receives one chromosome of each pair from each parent, paternity tests can be definitive.

it's only in marriage that women are valued in patriarchy. Many women have internalized the patriarchal view of themselves. What women truly value is not something patriarchy concerns itself with.

Males are genetically programmed to spread the seed, thereby perpetuating their DNA (the "stud" instinct). However, females are programmed not only to procreate (the "slut" instinct) but also to nurture the young (the "mom" instinct). Therefore, while males are attracted to a variety of potential mates, women select mates on the basis not only of genetics but also ability to provide and support.

The upshot is that in a monogamous society women have the social advantage of propensity for stability, whereas many if not most men are still struggling with the genetic predisposition to variety that threatens family and social instability. Many women also fall victim to their slut instinct also, since women prefer to mate with genetically well-endowed men also, but often have to repress this tendency in favor of provision and support. This can create a dynamic tension that is difficult for many to control successfully if they are not able to combine both characteristics in a monogamous mate.

Genital sexual activity is encouraged by the production and use of dopamine in the brain and CNS (the cum reflex), while love produces and uses oxytocin (the cuddle reflex). Dopamine gives the strong hit of peak orgasm (genitally centered), while oxytocin underlies valley orgasm (full body/brain). Males tend to aim at the former while females prefer the latter.

Biochemist Walter Last (the Love Cure) has written an interesting article exploring the implication of this knowledge for the development of high quality relationships through better sex education.

Healing with Sexual Energy: Sex for Health, Relationships and Spirituality

The chief of an African tribe expressed his astonishment to an early explorer that Westerners do not provide sexual training to their children. He believed this to be more important than any other kind of training, as healthy sexual development not only provides bliss for the individual, but also a harmonious family and tribal life.

tjfxh June 27, 2008 - 11:15am

Endocrinologists have known for years that oxytocin, released by the pituitary gland, ovaries and testes, helps trigger childbirth contractions, milk production during nursing and the pelvic shudders women experience during orgasm (and possibly the contractions during male orgasm as well). The hormone is believed to play a vital role in mother-child bonding and may do the same for new fathers: oxytocin surges when a new dad holds his bundle of joy. Source

So, back to the drawing board. Now why is it again that women are not supposed to enjoy recreational sex as much as men? Please, leave the kids out of it.

Bottom line, men are more easily addicted to dopamine while women tend to prefer oxytocin. Oxytocin preference is natural to women. But it's an acquired taste for men, and they have to learn to substitute valley organisms for peak. Men have to discover that oxytocin is the better way to go, and this involves some discipline to overcome their dopamine addiction.

BTW, men who do this are in a great position with women and are in high demand, because this is the way that women are best satisfied. In this end, men find that women are right in this if they undertake the necessary discipline to learn the technology.

Pass it over. Does one take this stuff on the rocks or straight up?

"Lord! What Fools these Mortals be!"

Doug Richardson June 28, 2008 - 6:05pm

Sexual desire, sex etc,. requires far more than Dopamine. Some of the chemicals and hormones involved include: Prolactin, Norepinephrine, Testosterone, Estrogen, Anabolic Steroids, DHEA, Serotonin, Oxytocin, Vasopressin and Opioids.

Dopamine modulates sexual desire in both females and males. Post coital release of vasopressin in men has the same effect as that of Oxytocin in women. In fact, we could cherry pick through the vast amount of research to find the results we prefer to believe. For example, support for a female's preference for new sexual partners can be found in this study. Then there is the effect of the release of dopamine in voles - it promotes pair-bonding which is the opposite of what you suggested it does in human males ("wham! bam! thank-you, ma'am!"). For an extensive collection of studies on sexuality visit this site.

There is no point referring to chemicals and hormones when one wishes to regulate human sexual behavior especially since both women and men are chemically predetermined not to be monogamous.

I'd be interested to know how that African tribe taught sexuality to their children. Did the Council on Sexuality consist of an equal number of women and men or did the men dictate to women how they ought to behave sexually?

Anyhow, getting back to the topic of the article, I'm prepared to make a slight concession. I don't believe women enjoy "one night stands" but they sure as hell enjoy "one and a half night stands". Ya dig, bro?

And then there's always stability for unstable desires.
