Sometimes I'm Not Responsible For What I Say

I fear listening again to what I said last night on The Young Turks. I hope to have the You Tube up soon. When someone calls me, semi-unexpected, as we had planned on the night before, but apparently my flat is a lead box and cell phone signals? Ha! But last night the call managed to get through. At 300am!

The idea of conversing in coherent thoughts is really rather beyond me at three in the morning. (I did manage to wake up 'The Afghan.') So, whatever I said, I disavow it right now unless, and only if, I manage to sound intelligent. Then I'll gladly tell you that no matter what time of day or night I'm always brilliant on the air. I'm not going to quit my day job--oh, wait, I don't have a day job. Anyway, hopefully we'll get the You Tube up and you can hear for yourself.

Speaking of 'The Afghan,' I must confess to being a slight ass. He wasn't asking me for money. He was kindly reminding me that half the rent was still due to the landlord. Embarrassing, yes?

But then, last night as I was emailing a friend this happened:

I have to tell you something funny. I'm horribly, horribly annoyed right now. The Afghan --oh what a character he is going to be in my second book!--is sitting right next to me just watching me type. He's just staring and I cannot even begin to tell you how bothersome it is. He looks at me and smiles a big, goofy, semi-toothless grin, and I have to do everything I can to not frown. But at what point does a person figure out body language? I mean, I know he doesn't speak much English--and that's putting it mildly. But sheesh, I mean, really? Get a clue, right? He just asked me if the time on my computer was correct and keeps staring at me as I type like what I am doing is some deep voodoo sorcery or something.

Oh, have I mentioned the Afghan yet? Well, allow me to introduce him. His name is Mahmoud and he's from Kabul. He is the landlord's handyman here in the apartment building I live in. Most of the tenant's share a common space/kitchen. And he just loves to hang out here and gawk, I guess. Damned if I know. Anyhow, his wife and son live in Iran and he's awaiting asylum papers from Canada. Obviously when I am in the flat I don't spend much time in the common room. I'm usually in my room reading or attempting to write.

And he's still there, waiting for me to strike up a conversation of something. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH!

But I struck back this morning. I was in one of those extremely silly wake-up moods that sometimes, but rarely, overcome me in the morning. I'm not a people person until I've had a shower and breakfast. But this morning, I was all grins, asking him questions while he was trying to eat, trying to get him to talk, half the food hanging out of his mouth. He was clearly annoyed with me, probably wondering what had overcome the taciturn, uncommunicative American he'd grown used to.

I blame the weather. There isn't a cloud in the sky today and the Bosporus was a shimmering sapphire blue this morning. Guaranteed to make anyone smile.

Update: So, I listened to my appearance last night on The Young Turks, as there is a live stream over there (which takes an exceptionally long time to load). It wasn't half bad. The first part about Frank Gaffney was pretty funny. And I had to laugh at myself for some of the things I said. But it was weird, the second half of the interview was compelling to listen to, like I was kind of disembodied, wondering who I was listening to? Perhaps I should do most of my interviews from now on at 3am in the morning?
