Syriasly Evil

President Bashar Assad of Syria deployed additional forces around Homs in an attempt to flush out the rebels holed up there.

It appears to have worked.

So despite the Arab League’s condemnation, and with only the tacit support of Iran, Assad has managed to stave off, at least for a little while, an overthrow.

This is going to get bloody, and soon.

Al Qaeda’s Zawahiri calls for war to oust Syria’s Assad

In a video message, Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri called for Muslims to rally for a war to oust Syria’s Bashar al-Assad.

Assad and his family have their hands very dirty in any number of ways (including drug running in the Baqaa Valley for decades) but the opposition stinks as well. Brian Downing reported that Saudi Arabia already has fighters in the effort and is funding it with arms. The attacks on the Syrian government take place in public areas and constitute terrorism (Saudi Arabia knows about that).

The entire Arab Spring movement has been coopted and is now just a vehicle for international manipulation in the great hunt for that last drop of oil.

The irony of this is that even if Syria is a civil war (and even if Libya was one), the analogy to this country would compel us to understand the use of violence to suppress that civil war. We has one, after all and it got very bloody.

Syria is not an imminent danger to the United States. We should just butt out.
