A Partial Victory

The Agonist - Final Update: The Brookings Institute has officially added two real liberals to live blog the event. While we would have preffered to have a real liberal bloggers SIT ON THE PANEL, and we have no animus towards Wonkette, we are pleased that the Brookings Institute has added Ruy Teixeira and Laura Rozen to the event. Thank you all for making the calls and sending out the emails. This is a victory, however small, and next time someone does a panel on the New Media they will think twice before they stuff it with conservatives.

After a rather hectic morning for Matt and I and probably also the Brookings Institute we seem to have achieved a victory of sorts. Josh Trevino, in a gracious gesture, declined to attend and instead suggested to Brookings that a liberal attend in his place.

The Brookings Institute is seriously considering inviting Melanie Mattson, a liberal blogger if there ever was one, to live-blog the panel. This would not have been our first choice. We would have preferred Melanie to SIT ON THE PANEL. And while this does not solve the problem of under-representation and outright misrepresentation of liberals in the media and academe this is an acceptable first step.

Please do not let up on the pressure. Continue making calls to Brookings and politely insist that they invite Melanie: 202-797-6310, or 202-797-6105. Melanie is a perfect candidate for the event and we look forward to reading Melanie's blog during thepanel.

But, as I said earlier, this is just a first step. If were find ourselves underrepresented again the same thing is going to happen again. We must be heard.

[Update: According to one source Ruy Teixiera and Laura Rozen have been invited to the panel. Serious people with serious things to say from the left - and to no small extent there because of your phone calls and emails.]

And maybe next time they do a panel on blogging, they'll add some bloggers.

Follow the money. This right-tilt has to be pushed by donations from wealthy powerbrokers hoping to drive the Brookings to make a harder right turn.  They have a budget.  Staffers are fighting to keep their jobs.  The unspoken understanding becomes: flatter the Robber Barons or watch the jobs go. What else could it be?  THese are highly educated suposedly critical thinkers with a tradition of liberality (ha).

if there is a next time, try guerilla tactics.

I'm thinkin you might have gotten even more press coverage, mostly bad, but the none the less; a clear point to be made.

They're obviously willing to lie to your face, why accept crumbs?

kind of nice. Since bloggers usually know what it is that bloggers do. :-)

are planning on doing something just like that. There is a whole group of us that are really fed up with this and we are putting our heads together and planning ways to get our message out and to get attention. As for me, the very, very, very vast majority of the time I'll never be invited to these panels and if I were I wouldn't be able to make it as they are all in DC or NYC--I'm in San Antonio, Texas, not exactly your run-of-the-mill cultural mecca--and having had negative press in the past I'm not afraid of gettting any in the future. What I am interested in is helping out the team. That is key. The trade off for me is that they have to listen to me rant about the important of international relations/military affairs and how they need to get right with it as a party. Ya know? That is the only reason I do any of this. People need to wake up and pay attention to the world. Not just Vegas. Ya know?
