Yuschenko Selects Anti-Kremlin Ukraine PM
Moscow | January 24

AP - Ukraine President Viktor Yushchenko, visiting Moscow on a trip to mend relations after a bitter election campaign, appointed top ally Yulia Tymoshenko as prime minister Monday a move likely to anger the Kremlin. Yushchenko, who was inaugurated Sunday, initially said he would need more consultations before nominating a prime minister. His hesitation seemed to be aimed at avoiding a provocative decision just before his Moscow trip his first foreign visit as president. But after arriving in the Russian capital, Yushchenko's office said he had nominated Tymoshenko.

Timoshenko, 44, is regarded even by her opponents as a gifted politician. But while she is revered in the nationalist, Ukrainian-speaking west of the country where Yushchenko's support is strongest, she is equally reviled in the Russian-speaking east. She is also regarded as a fugitive from justice by Russia where she is wanted in connection with a criminal bribery investigation dating back to the 1990s. Her appointment as prime minister, still subject to approval by the Ukrainain parliament, was certain to rile some Russian officials.

Just saw the photo on front page NYT and thought it was a neat thing. :-) Wait a few minutes and I will find something and edit it and post it. Unless someone else has something good? Or you can delete it if you think it shouldn't be a separate thread.

KIEV : Ukraine's parliament on Friday overwhelmingly endorsed Yulia Timoshenko as the country's new prime minister, sealing a dramatic political transformation that swept away the ex-Soviet republic's pro-Russia regime and brought Western-leaning democratic reformers to power.

Timoshenko, a charismatic but controversial politician who has served previously as a deputy prime minister and whose powerful public speeches fueled the "orange revolution" that sidelined the former regime late last year, voiced gratitude after the vote and promised honest government.

"Like anyone, I might make some technical mistakes. But on moral issues, I will remain so high that no one can regret the choice made today," the 44-year-old Timoshenko told lawmakers after the vote.

Her nomination to head the government was approved by 373 members of the 450-seat parliament, an unexpectedly strong endorsement that well exceeded the 226 votes required for confirmation. No one voted against the appointment while three deputies abstained.

Following her confirmation, Timoshenko announced her government's lineup, notably naming Boris Tarassyuk as foreign minister, Yuri Lutsenko as interior minister and Anatoly Hrytsenko as defense minister. She also nominated 25 new regional governors.

The parliament subsequently voted by a strong majority in support of her government's program.

"I know society expects a miracle, a social miracle, a miracle of return to order, a miracle of reestablishment of justice," she said after the vote, adding: "I am convinced we are going to begin this miracle."

Timoshenko, leader of a parliamentary bloc that bears her name, is wildly popular in the Ukrainian-speaking, nationalist west of the country where support for the country's newly-elected president, Viktor Yushchenko, is strongest.

But she is equally reviled in the Russian-speaking east of Ukraine and is wanted by neighboring Russia for questioning in connection with a criminal bribery investigation, and Yushchenko's choice of her to lead the new government was resisted by some in parliament.
