On the same day that it is announced that the escalation Bush authorized was ordered by Bush months ago - Gates promises that the "surge" will allow a draw down. Later. Perhaps.

These two statements are directly contradictory. The idea that Iranian influence can be contained in a short period of time by a few raids is absurd. Instead, the only explanation that makes sense is that escalation was planned earlier in the year, held off during the elections and unfriendly summer campaigning weather, when going out in full battle dress is hot and creates casualties from heat stroke - and is now being ramped up. The executive will promise anything to any one, later, if they will just give him what they want now. Ask the small government conservatives how well Bush keeps such promises - you don't need to listen to liberals like me.

"at some point I'm hopeful I'll figure out something to put here"

From my understanding Gates was the original creator of AlQaeda or rather "the database" of Arab fighters willing to engage the Russians in Afghanistan.

The second reason I believe they can't let these troops come home "en mass" is the depleted uranium issue. How would they contain the news of sick soldiers returning from the "glorious" war on terror.

was 9/11 not painful enough that now you believe conspiracy theories about the event that have been thoroughly discredited?

In your mind was President Kennedy transferred to a hospital and lives as a vegetable? Did the United States really land on the moon? Does Elvis still live and faked his death, because he was embarrassed that he aged?

The reality is that two airplanes brought those towers down and made a big hole in the Pentagon. I watched the second plane hit the towers. Hard to believe that they tumbled ... but that was the case.

It's the insanity that followed after the towers collapsed which is more unbelievable to me. Americans elected Bush twice--that takes credibility to the outer limits! How could they be sooooooo naive?

I LOVED that monkey suit bit. I completely missed it when counting the number of passes... I feel like an idiot.

Second... canuck said it already. The planes hit. The buildings collapsed. Because of the planes. All I see in that video is a demolition--there's no control anywhere. It's pretty clear from both where the buildings started falling (high up) and how they fell (very messy).

Honestly, how would you expect them to have collapsed? Should they have just keeled over sideways like a cut tree? Or just had a little bit fall off the top and not smash down on everything below it?

It happened. al-Qaeda most likely did it. Bush and friends took advantage of it.

Uh, what "Small Government Conservatives"? The past 6 years have made me very suspicious of the phrase, "Small Government Conservatives". Come to think about it, didn't Reagan expand the deficit and the millitary, and not until Clinton were these things brought down?

So, Agonistas:

Quite seriously, who is actually a "Small Goverment Conservative"? And don't tell me it's Justin Raimondo, I want someone who has atually been in some kind of political power within the past 20 years, even if they were an Alderman.

OK, Ron Paul. Anybody else?

talks the talk but...

Truth is, small government conservatives are almost non-existent among elected public officials, either Democrat or Republican.

The answer is always bigger and more.

I did inhale.

Don January 14, 2007 - 9:58am

Thank you. Exactly my frikkin' point. There's like maybe 3 people who are 'small government conservatives'. And they are not that real- Ron Paul has been a Republican congressman in Texas since 1997, and have you heard of any resistance of his to the Huge Government schemes of Bush? Did he even vote against any of the hugely expensive bills the Republicans have had to fund the Iraq war ("Defense Appropriations Bills", I think)? I didn't hear of it.

Will the "Small Government Conservatives" please stand up?

Buehler... Buehler?....

is Ron Paul's nick-name. Officially he's a Repubican, but he ran for president once as a Libertarian.

He's totally out of step with his party and they'd like to get rid of him in the worst way but he's immensely popular in his own district.

He advocates a smaller and less intrusive government and consistently votes that way.

He was the only House Republican that voted against funding the onging war in Iraq for instance.

I did inhale.

Interesting. So basically you are saying that Ron Paul is actually the real article, or at least kinda close to it?

Our virtues are usually only vices in disguise.

“Gulf of Tonkin”.

He ended by saying, “Let's hope I'm wrong about this one.”

canuck January 15, 2007 - 6:32am

Interesting. He's saying a lot of the stuff I try to say to people, about Iran, and Iraq. Maybe this guy really is a "Small Government Conservative".

Our virtues are usually only vices in disguise.

Aaron Dellutri January 15, 2007 - 5:34pm

but I always get his name mixed up with Ron Jeremy, the porn actor.

Escher Sketch January 13, 2007 - 7:12pm

Ron White (stand up comedian) for some reason. Oh well.

Bolo January 13, 2007 - 8:30pm

Hey at least Ron Jeremy has a talent.
