"Special operations forces will basically own the U.S. mission in Afghanistan"

SOF numbers in Afghanistan will go up, not down, after 2014, and they’ll be there until at least 2017 – which was always the plan no matter what the spin from the White House says.

Will the whole US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and CIA all become SOF?

Everyone with any sense of reality has known that this was the choice for many years now. You either go big and apply green army approaches, or you go to small contingents and CT approaches.

Why do you think some of us were against the CT approach? Because it’s going to go on for a long while as you and your countrymen increasingly ignore the ‘stan, as you did Iraq once it was no longer “teh sexy”, it’s going to significantly increase collateral and it’s not going to generate much to the enduring benefit of the host nation. It’s going to be whack a mole with less int about it and baling wire while the opposition denies real access and dreams about whether they can overrun a team house some fine day.

…that the US was going to go from green army approaches to out in one step. None. It’s just not in their nature.
