Enough about world peace. Tell us more about your tongue piercing.

It is always a pleasure to watch and study the professional, and dare I say statesmanly, way that both Congressman Dennis Kucinich and his wife Elizabeth conduct themselves in the rare moments they are granted mainstream media access.

I'm afraid I can't say the same about the Infotainment Jockeys of America's corporate media.

This "interview," to use the term loosely, between CBS's Hannah Storm of The Early Show and the Kuciniches, is a prime example of the patronizing, dismissive, arrogant, and absolutely-on-message antics of American corporate media.

Why report the news, or even listen to the responses of your invited guests, when you can force feed your audience a prefab media narrative instead?

Quick poll: before this interview, how many of you knew that Elizabeth Kucinich was 30 years her husband's junior? How many knew her tongue was pierced? How many of you already knew about her advanced education and accomplished record in international development?

I didn't know about the tongue-piercing.

geoduck November 24, 2007 - 8:36pm

It is just about the ONLY thing I've ever heard about her in previous coverage, aside from the fact that she's younger.

(And I realize that the sorry state of the media is hardly news, but this clip just really seemed to sum it all up.)

I don't watch much TV news coverage for exactly this reason--after 5 minutes I want to throw something at the TV. That's what 5 years of reading the Daily Howler (and other sites) does for ya!

And since you asked: I knew that his wife was much younger than him but never heard about a tongue piercing and never knew about her accomplishments (though I'm not surprised to hear of them).

I only knew about her past accomplishments, not the tongue piercing or the amount of the age difference.... I don't watch TV much at all. The corporate "news" media should all be un-employed immediately.

except that he married a much younger woman, but then again I try not to pay too much attention. lol

I knew of the age difference; did not know of the tongue ring. She could have a fucking tattoo for all I care.

Like Dennis said, paraphrasing here: {'the most important thing I would tell you, Hannah, as a professional, is it is important not to trivialize a woman whose accomplishments are great'} - and then, proceeds to list off his wife's accomplishments.

I heard Fred Thompson tell a reporter in response to a question along the lines of "who is your most trusted, valuable adviser?" or who is it you talk to when wishing to discuss something of importance - Thompson replied, "My wife." I'm not a fan of Fred Thompson, however that does seem to indicate to me that even a regular and real doofus recognizes the value of women.

that a bunch of old white men (and the enabling bitches they have for wives) have gotten us into, she'd be a refreshing change. Of course, it ain't gonna happen.

I did inhale.

The oddball factoids I've picked up about her I got through print media.

Ecophem, Kucinich and Thompson both come across as more feminist than Hannah Storm in my books.

ICH

...

I asked a dedicated liberal his impression of Kucinich; he wondered if Kucinich was too slight to lead a nation of truly fat folk. I pointed out that he has the same physical stature as James Madison, as well as a Madisonian commitment to our 1789 Constitution; he is also farsighted, as demonstrated by his resolute opposition to Bush's cries for ever more funding for the illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. More to the point, in October 2002 he opposed the notion of a war then being debated. For those of us at home and in harm's way from disease, he co-wrote HR 676, a bill that would insure all of us within Medicare, just as if we were citizens of a truly civilized nation.

I did inhale.

I did have to do some research to find that the Cleveland story you typically hear is a load of BS.
