but the comparison is bogus to begin with.
In my neck of the woods, we call that a 'barn jacket' and many farmers/ranchers wear them. I've got one in the closet myself and wear it when I'm doing rough work in cold weather.

Many viewers of Brokeback Mountain - including the anonymous Twittertwit - were probably urbanites who never saw a barn coat and therefore (ignorantly) considered it a mark of homosexuality simply because it was different from what they were familiar with. I've seen the same thing happen often - speak with a French accent in some parts of the country; wear clothing unusual for the area; show an interest in the arts; - anything different from the commonplace is interpreted as 'gay' - and that says more about the viewer than about the subject being viewed.

And while we're on the subject: call me a grammar Nazi if you will, but it has always bugged me that the word 'gay' got co-opted and is therefore useless to describe anything except homosexuality. Other slang terms for homosexuals have synonyms but there is no other word that means exactly the same thing as 'gay'. I'm okay with watching the language change, but that particular change impoverished English just the slightest little bit. :-(

also entered hip-hop fashion after having been adopted by drug dealers who stood out on the street all day in all sorts of unpleasant weather conditions. I have a gray one that I got from an online retailer because it was available in my unusual size for not very much money.

I see this latest chapter of Perry's clown act as just a happy accident, like the famous sausage-eating photo. I doubt I would ever have made the connection myself, even if I had seen the movie. And nobody else would be making the connection if Perry weren't such a compelling likeness of a closet fag, as vain and preening as any queen but abnormally harsh on those who are out.
