Is the chicken's home turf, after all. Some of them may actually be Red or Grey Junglefowl.

In any case, some of us like to look at chickens, especially strange foreign chickens. At the moment, my own chickens are molting, so they look like they've been battling with weedeaters.

I am trespassing on my own memories. Of course, I am glad I came back, but it's strange.

On my second trip to Cape Town, South Africa, I went to visit the exact same place where I had had so much fun the first time. However, everything had changed. The gay guy, with the fantastic sense of humor, with whom we used to play cards had sold his cute little coffee shop. We didn't connect with the new owners. So now we just savour the memories of our first visit.

Your situation is not the same either. The solitude of your first visit to Lake Toba must be somewhat different from your current experience.

that I was pining for Paris - one of the cities abroad where I'd lived for many years - he said "before you make any travel plans, better make sure you're not really pining for your youth. Because it ain't there either."

I didn't wind up moving back.

returning to his childhood home in Ireland, my grandfather finally made the long trip. Curiously, upon his return, he seemed reluctant to talk much about his visit.

Finally, my dad asked him how it felt to return home after so many years.

"Well me boy," said grandpa in his thick Irish brogue, "the auld place it ain't what it used to be." Then after a pause he added, "but then I guess it never was."
