The iPad? Not Yet There

As an avid Kindle user, an owner of an iPhone and a devout Mac enthusiast (I own a MacBookPro) I watched the rollout of the iPad yesterday with a great deal of interest. The iPad (a very unfortunate name, I might add, queue the obvious jokes) has promise, but it didn't go where I want it to go, just yet.

Like Krugman what I need right now is a unifier. Something that can crunch the photos, with lots of storage space (and 64gig ain't nearly enough), a multi-media platform for music and videos, a word processor, something I can surf the net on and an e-reader that doesn't fry my eyes. The iPad just isn't there yet. But when those things are combined, and I think Apple is just the company to do it, I'll be a buyer.

(And obviously I posted the comment below before watching the video which hits all the same points.)

Every time there is a reason for ranting, you can be sure that Hitler will be talking about it on YouTube. Recently, he has responded to the iPad; before that, he got mad because Chicago didn't get the Olympics, because of Facebook, because of the US bailout, and simply because he wanted to go to Burger King. These parodies use a scene from Downfall, the 2004 movie by Oliver Hirschbiegel – in the original, it's the moment that Hitler is told the war is truly lost – and are frequently taken down for copyright infringement on behalf of the movie's owner, Constantin Film. As of now, there are about 68 still up.

Hitler, of course, has been at this for quite a while now. But as the iPad video showed, millions of millions of users still think he is worth a click. So why does this Hitler meme seem to be so enduringly popular?

Sounds like the what can be done with the iPad is limited to what Apple say it can do, which is very unlike a general purpose computer/laptop.

DRM is used by Apple to restrict users' freedom in a variety of ways, including blocking installation of software that comes from anywhere except the official Application Store, and regulating every use of movies downloaded from iTunes. Apple furthermore claims that circumventing these restrictions is a criminal offense, even for purposes that are permitted by copyright law.

setting aside the fact that it's four or five times too big to carry in a pocket, the most serious impediment would seem to be that it can't even make phone calls.

- will cost $50-100
- will have a display that is based on e-ink or a similar technology. I read 600 pages of the Illuminatus! Trilogy on a 19" CRT. Never again.
- will have a USB connection and accept flash memory cards
- will display PDFs

That's it. I've been impressed by the Kindle, but the price point and non-openness prevent me from buying one. I'd consider paying more for a device like this if I could save a substantial amount of money on textbooks, but most of the textbooks I've looked up are not available digitally at the moment.

$499 will buy a lot of books, and while I'd like an iPhone I really can't say that I need one.

as a 'Kindle Killer', depending on how Apple does their Apps, but
for me, if I were to get one, it'd be a Multi-Media screen, so I could watch my anime or read the books I'd download....but it doesn't have enough memory to make that worth my while, yet.

So, I'll just have to suffer with my MBPro for now ;-)

95% of users don't care about DRM. Apple doesn't sell DRM music anymore. Video, yeah, because the studios won't permit it otherwise. iBooks? Nobody knows yet, as the .epub format does not support any kind of DRM. Have to wait and see.

Flash is fading. Web site operators who rely on it may soon notice that iPhone users (I don't know how many millions there are now but they are an attractive market demographic) are staying away from their sites (many already have) and provide a Flash-free experience. They are in business to make money for themselves not for Adobe. I have been running a Flash blocker for months now and I think my browser has crashed maybe once since then, instead of daily, and it doesn't soak up a gig of memory anymore either and runs a hell of a lot faster.

Flash is a big fat stinky virus cloaked in legitimacy. There is little it does that you can't do with something else.
