Painful

[On January 2, The Agonist was hit by a spamming / hacking attack, and was taken off line temporarily] -qB

Wow! That was painful. But over, for the time being. Thank you all for your patience. We will be migrating to a new platform in the very near future, as this one is decidedly broken and limping along with band-aids and what not. But, we're up and running.

For the time being, new registrations for new logins are off, due to the havoc the spammer attack caused. If you are a new reader, or just a long time reader who wants a login, please email Steve and we'll set one up for you. (cernig-at-sbcglobal.net)You'll need to know the secret Agonista password. Any long time or newer and regular reader will know it.

Once again, thank you for your patience!

Glad you are back.

Preferably by spoon.

Anything that we need to be careful of? As in should we be posting news or should we be careful not to abuse the old thing?

Oh, and thanks for what I'm sure was a metric buttload of painful work...

glad y'all were patient. There was one moment when I nearly just said, "fuck it." Of course, Tina would have none of it.

I know it was just a conspiracy to make me realize I had a facebook page!

I found out I had two. I was bored, it was very hard staying awake at work this weekend!

Tina January 4, 2010 - 10:25pm

the spammerbot attempted to hit us again, which leads me to believe it was automated. But I literally know dick-all about that kind of stuff.

used a forum registration scheme that included a multicharacter graphic that required one to type the chars into a response window as a means to distinguish a flesh-and-blood from a spambot....

just thinking out loud.....

as for killing the spammer by spoon....I have a manga where a character kicks the crap out of a half-dozen armed opponents with a rice-paddle..... you'd laugh your butt off at the image....(if I could paste it here...:-/ )

Chalk up one for the defenders. Here’s how a trio of security researchers used a three-step attack to defeat a 250,000-pronged botnet.

Preferably alive.

Glad yer back up, bud. One of these days the spammers will piss off the wrong people, and then their pain will be legendary, even in...high school.

usually start the morning looking for interesting stories and reading them together while drinking coffee. I have a string of sites I check, and read aloud the stories we find interesting. The last few days, Jane has been asking "Is Agonist back up?" It will be nice to have a normal morning.

pihwht January 5, 2010 - 11:00am

I do find it interesting that Agonist would be so attractive to the wreckers.

The drupal capcha module or mollom on all form submissions
I don't know the status of those modules for drupal 4 though.
