A Little Good News, Unemployment Drops, Economy Loses Only 11k Jobs

A little good news is warranted these days:

The Labor Department reported Friday that the United States economy shed 11,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 10 percent, down from 10.2 percent in October.

The government also significantly revised September and October numbers. September was adjusted to show a loss of 139,000 jobs instead of 219,000, and October 111,000 instead of 190,000.

I'll take the good news.

Update: Ian breaks down the numbers.

Update 2: Krugman says the employment news "is a tragedy, wrapped in a weird complacency."

good news where I can get it. And no, I am not saying I totally believe those numbers, but anecdotal evidence here in Austin indicates to me that the last month or so on the job front has been, if not outright improving, then at least not falling off a cliff. So, yeah, in a sense, I believe the numbers inasmuch as I see a few signs of betterment in my own narrow corner of the globe.

Are all those Austin jobs equal or exceed living wages levels or are minimum wage?

months have gotten good, $65-85k a year jobs, most in the tech/software/it/telecom industry.

As an unemployed software developer here in Austin, any suggestions on where they're hiring?

Most of the job openings that I come across, and get submitted on, are contract jobs with the state, mostly the Health and Human Services Commission. It seems state aid is a booming business.

You'd think they'd correlate the fact that I'm getting unemployment and they'd save that cost if they'd just hire me for one of the open state positions! :)
