How Do They Get Away With It?

Mannion waxes eloquent. A must read. The double standard is truly ugly to behold.

And if you're not a Mannion reader, let me suggest you become one. Always excellent prose and insights, one of the very few writers in my RSS feed.

was that it must have occurred in a very small town. Incredible. Much as I hate how litigious the U.S. has become, I hope this woman has some sort of legal recourse. Probably not, though. Seems like "Joe" the dad is trolling for some school district bucks.
Good writing from this fellow...thanks for the heads up.

snoopers now legally monitor email and telephone calls--marginally retained were citizens rights. Kids wear monitoring devices for parent's convenience. Homeland Security encourages the American population to spy on their neighbours anonymously.

Dirty laundry sells, ethics do not!

Where's the repeal of the Patriot Act and restoration of Habeas Corpus?

Agree that it's disturbing that this teacher's rights were violated, but isn't it just another stick on the bonfire? Howard Dean authored a book entitled, You Have the Power How to Take Back Your Country Sounds like time would be well spent reading it because the chipping away of freedoms has become dire.

that go as deep as our puritanical, witch-hunting traditions.

Personally I'd like to see something emerge that could become havens for women the way convents have been, just without the supervision of the church daddies. Maybe a network of retreats where women could stay for as long or as briefly as we wished, to distance ourselves from the diseased dominant culture so we could cook up some new and improved ways of organizing our communities.

I hear that some of our first nations communities have matri-local and matriarchal traditions. Maybe we could turn to them to help us find the way out of our sexist cultural cul-de-sac.

only affirm that some of the southeastern Nations had a matrilineal community, and that it makes too much sense for a "civilized" culture to adopt. My heritage is Cherokee, Choctaw, Comanche and Irish, but because of the nature of a matrilineal society, if you ask me what I am, I will simply say Cherokee. In this type of society, the women are the heads of the families, and the heads of clans (an "extended" family, to simplify). The family tree is traced through the women. Typically, several generations of a family live together. There is no such thing as an orphan, an aunt or grandmother would take the child as her own. There is no such thing as homelessness. Everyday tasks are divided equally among the physically able. The elderly are greatly respected and cared for as such.

This is just a thumbnail sketch. Interesting that this should be mentioned, I've long thought about writing more in depth about it.

do write more in depth about it. I would love to learn about the culture of Native Americans. Not just the role of women, but about their medical and legal traditions as well.

... have in mind - there are women's refuges in many European cities and I am aware of a similar program here in Toronto.

It is a testament to how broken our societies are that they usually operate at maximum capacity. In most cases sheltering women from spousal abuse or in even more extreme cases "honor killings". The latter is a real problem for Germany and France that have large poorly integrated Muslim immigrant minorities. (BTW don't want to imply that Islam condones these crimes in any way. Far from being an expert on this subject I think these crimes are motivated by an even older throw back to brutal patriarchal traditions that directly derive from prime evolutionary impulses).

a sacred sanctuary for women would be ideal. Even if it was only to take a brief respite from all the ridicule and objectification in the media.
