American Presidents Do Not Bow To Kings

American president's do not bow to kings. American president's do not bow to anyone, unless it's a Japanese premier, or a Korean or maybe Chinese one, who has initiated the bow. It's just that simple. To bow in front of a foreign monarch is an unacceptable sign that the sovereignty which derives from the American res publica is in some way lesser than the divine right of kings. I mean, what the fuck? Didn't we, like, you know, um, have a revolution for just that reason?

I don't know if this is a rookie move, but to me it looks especially bad because it is directed towards the Saudi monarch. As if the United States, his country's defender of last resort is beneath his dignity!

Repeat after me: American presidents do not bow to kings.

without bowing, I suppose!

Odd.

I'd kind of thought the ZOMG ELEVENTY EXCLAMATION POINTS OBAMA BOWED TO TEH KING OF TEH MUSLIMS thing would have been replaced by some other bright shiny new objet d'shithead by now -- it's about 11PM Eastern, and this "story" "broke" sometime this morning. The wingnut attention span just isn't that long, usually, and even by these cretins' standards this "story" is pretty thin drool. But no, they're still at it, and are even making it stupider. Impressive, I suppose.

As I discussed chez moi (which means "buttsex," like all other French words) this afternoon, the "evidence" that Obama "bowed" in a sycophantic fashion to Saudi Arabian monarch King Abdullah is kind of shaky. It wasn't much of a bow, and was certainly not "deep" or even any big deal (go look for yourself, about 50 seconds in). The incident did not occur in a formal setting, so "protocol" is not to the point. And anyway it's the sort of thing you'd have to be an utter imbecile to even care about in the first place, which explains, of course, why utter imbeciles seem to care about it so goddamn much....

No reason to get upset about them. The real question, with regard to the Saudi monarch, is whether we are going to move aggressively in the direction of an oil-free society.

In the world of politics, and in this case especially geo-politics, perception, protocol, and insinuation mean everything. I agree. Our Preznit should bow to no one. Ever.

Is it the end of the world? no. But it wasn't good.

Totally inconsequential. If you disagree, please, explain the potential causal links between Obama bowing and anything else of substance. I just don't see them. Same thing with kissing the Pope's hand or any other stupid rituals.

Doing with this stupid meme. I would expect this on hannity or limbaugh. What a joke

important. And, as you are aware, The Agonist is always and forever open to debate. If you don't like it, you are free to say so and give concrete reasons why. I gave my reasons for why Obama should not have bowed.

But it's funny how a little respect can go a long way. Leave Obama alone, he understands the ins and outs of social decorum a hundred times better than we ever will. I bet the dude steps out of the shower to take a piss. Now that's class!

Sean-Paul is correct,Presidents do not bow to anyone.Ever.

to me it appears as if the king or Obama dropped something. Everyone is looking down at a lower level than a bow would be. The king and Sarkozy are smiling as if there's something funny that is happening. "Methinks you'all protests too much". He sure didn't bow to the Queen of England.
