"The Common Humanity That Binds Us"

I caught this on CNN earlier and I was pleased. The way it was spun on CNN International was quite different than how the New York Times spins it. The Times focuses on Israel, terror and arms, whereas CNN International focused on Obama's commitment to engagement. Of course CNN International's audience and that of the NY Times are very different.

Regardless, this is a solid first step. I know there are a lot of cynics out there who fear Obama is just going to go through the motions and then follow the neo-con line. But I don't think so. This is a pretty high risk attempt at some kind of engagement. And the fact that Obama chose Nowruz, the Iranian New Year celebration shows they are committed to this path.

It beats the hell out of the alternative. And it is also nice to see the Obama Administration get something right. Lord knows I have been extremely hard on their economic policy thus far. President Obama's video can be seen after the jump.

He needs Iran now more than they need us. In addition, the US is no position to attack Iran at this juncture, so war-mongering has become ineffective, if it ever was.

The ball is in Obama's court now.

Iran was not always against Israel, History shows that at one time the king of persia (Iran)was very much with this people. Now since the U.S. backs Israel and we are allies they hate us.Now where King Cyrus once rebuilt the Temple of the Lord stands an abomination on the temple mount to which this president (King) of Iran has his sights set on by his own statement of extermination of the Jewish People.

The Book of Ezra
Chapter 1
1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
3Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
5 Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
6 And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.
7 Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;
8 Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.
9 And this is the number of them: thirty chargers of gold, a thousand chargers of silver, nine and twenty knives,
10 Thirty basins of gold, silver basins of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand.
11 All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.

The Book of Matthew
Chapter 24
1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
3And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Isa 19:2 Mark 13:8 Luke 21:10
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Dan 9:27,12:11 Mark 13:14
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Dan 12:1 Mark 13:19
22And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25 Behold, I have told you before.
26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Isa 13:10 Mark 13:25 Luke 21:26
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Zech 12:12 Dan 7:13 Mark 13:26 Luke 21:27
31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Deut 30:4 1 Thess 4:16,17
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The book of Mark
Chapter 13:12-14
12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
Micah 7:6 Matt 10:35,36
13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
Dan 9:27 Dan 12:11 Matt 24:15

God has poured out blessings on the U.S. because of our support in the establishment and continuity of Israel.

1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee:
Acts 7:3
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

After president sends New Year message, Tehran says it wants to see action on policies

From Tribune news services
March 21, 2009
A measured response to Obama

TEHRAN — An Iranian official responded cautiously Friday to President Barack Obama's Persian New Year overture for a new beginning in relations, saying Tehran wants to see discernible changes in U.S. Middle East policies before it agrees to rapprochement with Washington.

Ali Akbar Javanfekr, a ranking adviser to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, told the Los Angeles Times in a phone conversation that if Obama "shows goodwill and goes beyond words to take practical measures, the state and nation of Iran will not turn its back" on him. "We welcome the wish of the U.S. president to put away past differences."

Iran has responded suspiciously to the Obama administration's conciliatory gestures, which are in marked contrast to the tough talk of the Bush administration. Obama, whose middle name, Hussein, is that of a revered Shiite Muslim saint, remains enormously popular in Iran and the Islamic world.

But Iranian officials suspect that the new administration is softening its rhetoric without changing its policies in an attempt at diplomatic outreach meant to fail and pave the way to get now-reluctant leaders in China and Russia on board for tougher action against the Islamic Republic.

Watching Barack Obama's address to the Iranian public from outside the United States, though obviously not from inside Iran, I don't share Andrew Sullivan's concern that it will come off as patronizing. Instead I think it will seem, for those able to watch, startlingly and disarmingly respectful. After all, this is the President of the United States, not denouncing or lecturing an "enemy" audience but addressing them in friendly and supportive terms. Therefore I think it is part of a shrewd long-term play for rapprochement with an Iranian public that by all reports is potentially far more pro-Western than its current zealot leadership. Of course the same people who disagreed with Obama in 2002 about the wisdom of invading Iraq are certain to denounce him now for being too soft.

But clearly this approach does not solve the short-term problem of curbing the Iranian leadership's nuclear ambitions. Unfortunately, and for fuller discussion another time, no other approach immediately solves that problem either. For now it is worth considering this extensive analysis from CSIS, by the indefatigable Anthony Cordesman and Abdullah Toukan, of the ever-tempting "Osirak" option: allowing / encouraging / condoning / watching Israeli warplanes as they attack nuclear facilities in Iran.

The report is more than 100 pages long and tries to assess the feasibility of an attack from every angle. (A 2006 assessment by Cordesman of all options for dealing with Iran is here. The results of a 2004 Atlantic-sponsored "war game" involving Iran are here.) In its examination of second- and third- order effects, it strongly reminds me of the reports I read and wrote about in 2002, emphasizing that the conquest of Iraq was likely to be far more complex, costly, and likely to backfire than its boosters assumed. Many of the same boosters are again willing to assume away the practicalities in urging a military showdown with Iran.

After the jump, a few of the summary points. But you should look at the whole report.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed overtures from President Barak Obama on Saturday, saying Tehran does not see any change in U.S. policy under its new administration.

Khamenei's comments were the first top level reaction to a video message Obama released Friday in which he reached out to Iran on the occasion of Nowruz, the Persian new year.

Khamenei holds the last word on major policy decisions, and how Iran ultimately responds to any concrete U.S. effort to engage the country will depend largely on his say.

In his most direct assessment of Obama and prospects for improved ties, Khamenei said there will be no change between the two countries unless the American president puts an end to U.S. hostility toward Iran and brings ''real changes'' in foreign policy.

''They chant the slogan of change but no change is seen in practice. We haven't seen any change,'' Khamenei said in his speech, which was broadcast live on state television.

Katherine Butler: It will take more than poetry to heal the Iranian wounds

Monday, 23 March 2009

Why has Iran apparently dismissed Barack Obama's call for "a new beginning"? As Iranians celebrated Nowruz, the Persian new year, marking renewal and the arrival of spring, the US President offered them his gift: a video in which he praised their great civilisation, said that he wanted to pursue dialogue across the range of differences while urging them to give up their old threats.

Over the weekend, a first response from Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, came in a sermon. Iran's most powerful figure in its complex political hierarchy, described what in the West was being called an extraordinary overture as "a slogan", meaningless without an accompanying shift in America's actions. This was greeted in Washington as a rebuff. Yet anyone who thought Iran would instantly embrace the "make love not war" message from the US is either naive or has forgotten history.

In Tehran recently, I had the opportunity to ask scores of Iranians what they thought of Barack Obama and the prospects for a new beginning. Answers ranged from the young woman student who smiled and said; "We don't trust him", to the man running a caviar export business who frowned and said "He's a breath of fresh air, he's intelligent and he'll change the world". One theme was common to the replies: America would have to treat Iran with respect and accept that its wish for a civilian nuclear programme was reasonable.

The sense of injured national pride is immense and it will take more than a few lines of Persian poetry to melt Iranians' suspicions about Western motives. Yes, President Obama referred in his broadcast to "the Islamic Republic of Iran" – diplomatic code that he is not seeking regime change. But why should Iran trust any American leader's words?
