Dodged A Bullet

Boy, did we dodge a bullet with this appointment: George Mitchell, former Senator from Maine (D) will be Obama's Middle East envoy. No Dennis Ross. Man, this one is huge. I like Mitchell for this role. "He did," as someone on a listserve I belong to said, "good work in Northern Ireland."

From The WaPo:

As one of his first actions, Obama plans to name former senator George J. Mitchell (D-Maine) as his Middle East envoy, aides said, sending a signal that the new administration intends to move quickly to engage warring Israelis and Palestinians in efforts to secure the peace.

More at the Washington Note.

On a somewhat related note, here is an interesting piece on 'The Myth of Israel's Strategic Genius' by Stephen M. Walt. Here's an exemplary quote:

The idea that Israelis possess some unique strategic acumen undoubtedly reflects a number of past military exploits, including the decisive victories in the 1948 War of Independence, the rapid conquest of the Sinai in 1956, the daredevil capture of Adolf Eichmann in 1960, the stunning Israeli triumph at the beginning of the 1967 Six Day War, and the intrepid hostage rescue at Entebbe in 1976.

These tactical achievements are part of a larger picture, however, and that picture is not a pretty one. Israel has also lost several wars in the past -- none of them decisively, of course -- and its ability to use force to achieve larger strategic objectives has declined significantly over time. This is why Israelis frequently speak of the need to restore their "deterrent"; they are aware that occasional tactical successes have not led to long-term improvements in their overall security situation. The assault on Gaza is merely the latest illustration of this worrisome tendency.

The WaPo also mentions President Obama's plans for GITMO, which is more excellent news:

By the end of the week, Obama plans to issue an executive order to eventually shut down the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and to lay out a new process for dealing with about 250 detainees remaining at the prison.

Shaping up to be a decent honeymoon, if you ask me.

Find this quite worthy of attention.

Certainly a big plus in my book if pro-Israel circles find him to be too fair.

9/11 Families Outraged by Obama Call to Suspend Guantanamo War Crimes Trials
Families of victims of terrorist attacks say they are outraged by President Obama's call to halt the trials of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

Family members of people killed on September 11, 2001, and in other terror attacks say they are outraged by President Obama's draft order calling for the suspension of war crimes trials of prisoners being held at Guantanamo Bay.

"To me it's beyond comprehension that they would take the side of the terrorists," said Peter Gadiel, whose son, James, was killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11. "Many of these people have been released and been right back killing, right back at their terrorist work again."

Obama's request on the first full day of his presidency came as a draft order was being prepared ordering the closing of the Guantanamo prison within a year. A judge responded by halting the case against a Canadian detainee accused of killing an American soldier in Afghanistan, issuing a 120-day continuance in the case.

Inasmuch as even prosecutors at Gitmo have thrown up their hands at the clusterfuck that the military tribunals have become, trust FoxNews to frame the suspension (for review) as sort of a "stab in the back" or "betrayal" of "9/11 victims/survivors". Khalid Sheihk Mohammad and Ramzi Binalshibh, among others currently at Guantanamo, who have admitted their role in the 9/11 attacks, have already entered guilty pleas, and are practically begging for execution, surely satisfying any revenge demanded by the people interviewed by FoxNews. The elementary fact that the overwhelming bulk of prisoners at Guantanamo are well removed from any allegations of "terrorism" that have affected anyone in the US, and there is a high likelihood that eventually most will be released in one form or another. If there is a negative spin to Obama's first few actions as President, count on Fox and the right-wing talk machine to be there front and centre, from Hour One of this new administration.

Conservatives never do very well in the role of underdog, imo Women and children be damned they're always the first off any sinking ship - except for ultra extreme xian cultists and about 18 virgin male anti-abortionists.

Far more worrying for me are those legions of individuals on the nozzle holding ends of all those firehoses pointed at civil rights protesters and all those white pointed heads lurking inside the white pointed hoods of the klan gang (still stupid after all these years)and so many more who absolutely believe in the supremacy of melanin starved skin pigmentation over morality. They also have long memories. Will there be a vicious backlash when this president hits a rough patch? Count on it.

But it won't be organized. It won't be in the form of an anti gov policy platform. Or newscasters denied insider stories. And it won't be from international gangs of evil doers. It'll be far worse. It'll be from some toothless trailer trash named Larry who's mad as hell and decides not to take it anymore. And I don't even dare think about that.

... who happened to be a child at the time that he was supposed to have killed the US soldier. Odd, how they forgot to mention that little detail.

By Paul Woodward, War in Context, January 22, 2009

On December 18, 2008, Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies welcomed an honored American guest who participated in the 2nd Annual International Conference: Security Challenges of the 21st Century.

Former US Senator George Mitchell presented, “The American Perspective.” Note the definite article — Mitchell was not simply presenting an American perspective. Indeed, Haaretz reported yesterday that the institute’s director, Oded Eran, “found out on the eve of the conference that Mitchell had been chosen as the next Mideast envoy, though the envoy-designate did not discuss his new position.”

Did Mitchell’s anticipated imminent return to the region as President Obama’s Middle East envoy provide an added incentive for Israel to launch its assault of Gaza? After January 20 the strain on US-Israeli relations would have been severe.

But what could be so threatening about such a renowned American elder statesman? How could someone with Mitchell’s track record — a pivotal role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland — not provide an invaluable contribution to a moribund peace process?

Among Israel’s leaders and some of its most influential supporters it is Mitchell’s virtues that present the most ominous threat.

In The Jerusalem Post, under the headline, “Mitchell: Every conflict can be solved,” Herb Keinon candidly exposes Israel’s fear of an honest broker. Citing the findings of Mitchell’s 2001 report on the causes of the Second Intifada, Keinon writes:
