Paul Newman, 83, Dies

Well, this sucks: "The Actor Paul Newman Has Died at 83, According to His Spokeswoman.

Newman was a class act.

All the way around.

From the Times: "Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money," has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends."

My personal favorite movie that Newman starred in was "The Sting." I think my Dad would agree.

Newman lived a long, full life.

There are a lot of great movie actors, but for me Newman was the best of the best. And I have nothing but respect and admiration for how he lived his life off the screen.

I don't want to pick just one, but if I had to pick just one it would be Cool Hand Luke, with The Hustler a close second.

The man was a very competent and dedicated automobile racer that raced both club and professional races under the name PL Newman. I had the pleasure of watching him quite a few times.

Most important virtue was his and his wife's dedication to many charitites. There have been better actors, better race drivers, better proponents of charitable causes BUT never has there been a better combination in one man.

God Speed, Mr. Newman and thank you for many memorable hours.

behind. What shines through and distinguishes Paul Newman from other actors, is his humanity. Our family and friends are sadden by the news of his death.

I stepped into a hotel elevator and he was in there, all alone, hot, sweaty and very tired looking, wearing his driver's racing suit. He had propped himself up against the wall. After my less-than-subtle double-take, I asked him how he had made out that afternoon. As he exited onto his floor he turned and, in a perfect "Cool Hand Luke" shrug and smile, he said "Won a case of beer."
