Who Is Abu Khabab Al-Masri?

This story seems to have come off the wires a few hours ago:

AN AL-QAEDA chemical and biological weapons expert named Abu Khabab Al-Masri was killed in a suspected US missile strike, Pakistani intelligence officials said a day after the attack.

Al-Masri, who carried a US$5 million (S$6.8 million) bounty on his head, had earlier been identified as the likely target of Monday's strike on a house in a madrasa compound in a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan.

I wonder if it will get any play? As of 5:33AM Eastern time it's still not up on the Times' site. It's up, but not being given very prominent play. So I guess we'll see. And wouldn't something like this really play into Obama's strengths as he has called for just such actions--and been howled down by the far right for being reckless? It's almost eerie that the right seems to have adopted Obama's foreign policy down the last detail. What's next, McCain calling for national, er, kinda national healthcare?

Al Masri

Abu Khabab al-Masri Killed in Pakistan Strike

The strike on the compound in Damadola, Pakistan, where Ayman al-Zawahiri. al-Qaeda’s number two in Command, was believed to be attending a dinner to celebrate a Mulslim holiday, has netted at least one high-level al-Qaeda operative. Pakistani intelligence has confirmed that Abu Khabab al-Masri, al-Qaeda’s chief bomb maker and chemical weapons expert. Counterterrism expert Dan Darling reported that Masri ran al-Qaeda’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Program, known as “Project al-Zabadi” and was likely involved in the foiled Amman WMD attack.

After the U.S. ejected the Taliban from power in Afghanistan, Masri’s training camps were discovered.Tapes were discovered and the results of Masri’s experiments were aired on CNN.

Masri had a $5 million dollar bounty on his head. The Rewards For Justice program lists Masri’s resume:

Midhat Mursi al-Sayid ‘Umar AKA Abu Khabab al-Masri, is an explosives expert and poisons trainer working on behalf of al Qaeda. He operated a terrorist training camp at Derunta, Afghanistan where he provided hundreds of mujahidin with hands on poisons and explosives training. Since 1999, he has proliferated training manuals that contain recipes for crude chemical and biological weapons. Some of these training manuals were recovered by U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Masri also was a close associate of Nasar Mustafa Setmariam [AKA Abu Musab al-Suri]; “Nasar worked closely with Midhat Mursi al-Sayid ‘Umar (a.k.a. Abu Khabab al-Masri) to train extremists in poisons and chemical during his time in Afghanistan, and was also involved in training at the al-Ghuraba terrorist camp.” al-Suri was recently captured in Pakistan, and was chief ideologue and leader of al-Qaeda in Europe.

It is indisputable that Abu Khabab al-Masri was a high level al-Qaeda operative and leader, and a dangerous man with intimate knowledge of explosives and al-Qaeda’s WMD program. Claims the airstrike in Damadola only killed innocent villagers can now be laid to rest.

Also... "ABC News is reporting that at least one of those killed in the bombing in Pakistan was an al Qaeda bomb maker and chemical weapons expert with a $5 million reward for his capture. Midhat Mursi, 52, also known as Abu Khabab al-Masri".

No, no, this time he's really, really a goner. No update on who the other guy with the same name was, all the more complicated cause they didn't have the right picture, or maybe they did but maybe that was of Al Masri Jr, son of the other guy. Apparently, using missiles to kill somebody isn't a very exact procedure - especially when you don't know his name or what he looks like.

Misreported death

He was reported to have been killed in the Damadola airstrike in Pakistan on January 13, 2006 along with several other al-Qaeda operatives.[3][4] The target of the strike was Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda's number 2 man. Pakistani intelligence originally confirmed Mursi's death in the airstrike along with al-Zawahiri's alleged son-in-law, Abdul Rehman al-Maghribi, but on September 8, 2007 the Washington Post, citing "U.S. and Pakistani officials", said that all the dead in that raid had been locals.

Wrong photo

The CIA acknowledged on January 26, 2006 that they had been using a photo of Abu Hamza al-Masri in their wanted photo for Midhat Mursi, who shared the similar alias "Abu Khabab al Masri".[6][7][8] Midhat Mursi's poster at the Rewards for Justice Program now carries a different photo.

Confirmed Killing

On July 28, 2008, the Pentagon confirmed al-Masri was killed in a missile strike in Pakistan that also killed five other al-Qaida members"

they fired a missile and hit "a kebab" instead of "A. Khabab"?

CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida has posted a statement on the Internet saying one of its commanders in Afghanistan has been killed by a U.S. airstrike.

Thursday's statement was dated July 14 and signed by the terror network's top Afghanistan commander, Mustafa Abu al-Yazeed.
