Singapore Bound

Just wanted to share with you all some good news. Sometime around the first of July I will be relocating (yes, once again) to Singapore for several months, at a minimum. I'm excited. The company I work for is expanding and asked me to go work in our new Singapore office. Rest assured I'll find some time to jot down any ideas and misadventures that do occur.

It's strange how successful, thus far, my return to corporate America has been. I'd always wanted to do something like this--and to think someone is now paying me to? Holy shit!

It's not something I really ever expected, but I'm grateful. There are many other better qualified people out there who could do what I do--what with our lousy economy and all--so I do consider myself very lucky to be doing what I'm doing.

Besides, the bonus is this: Phuket is a 45 minute flight from Singapore and Bali is just an hour and a half. Ain't that sweet?

off to yet another exotic place.

Singapore ain't that exotic (in fact it's a bit dull) but as others point out it's surrounded by other places which are worth visiting.

Java is incredible, only 2 hours flight, is very welcoming and well worth your time as is much of Malaysia

Borneo is no less out of the way, and equally fascinating. Also try Sarawak and Sabah on the island.

It would be interesting to hear your views on Singapore's "Democracy." I have talked to several people who lived there. They loved it, but they were clear on one point: there's a ruling family, and you stay on their good side. You DO NOT rock the boat in Singapore. Do your job, be a good westerner, spend some of your dough.

Some folks think the benevolent dictatorship works better than what we have here. It would be interesting to hear what you think.

at least once every few months and have for years. It's not that bad. it's not a democracy in much more than name, being more a Lee controlled partially benevolent dictatorship pretending to be a democracy. The shopping is great, if a little staid, there is fantastic eating and the bars can be fun. A certain amount of rocking the boat is tolerated but the media is rather controlled. That said there are some killer bookshops, especially Kinokuniya on Orchard.

But essentially Singapore's problem is that it's rather soulless, and humourless. If you want edge in South East Asia, try Bangkok or Jakarta, both of which I prefer on just about every level apart from the traffic.

I've seen claims that Singapore is proof positive that you don't need democracy to be prosperous, you need the Rule Of Law.

Anyone? Agree? Disagree?
