Earlier Today . . .

. . . I was having a conversation with some other bloggers about the Levin-Lieberman lovefest leading us closer and closer to war:

Right after Sen. Lieberman voted against U.S. troops on the Webb amendment, he launched his new Iran Amendment – cosponsored by pals Kyl, Graham, Collins and Sessions with strong support by McCain – and Senator Levin could not fall over himself fast enough to display his love of his big pal from CT. Watch here – but prepare yourself – it will test your gag reflex mightily. . . This gist of the amendment: It is the sense of the senate that Iran is participating in acts of war against the United States.

And Atrios said something that is unsettling in the extreme but all too possible:

"How could you not support military action against a country committing acts of war against the United States?"

-Every single conservative and Republican in the weeks before the Iran AUMF vote.

The Senate just helped enable this president to attack Iran. If our august Senate has the sense that Iran is participating in acts of war, how far are they away from granting this president an AUMF? Not far if you ask me. It's damn near impossible to climb down from a claim like that. It's insane what the Senate is doing. And Atrios has this one pegged. That's how it'll go down, no doubt about it.

When the progressives we want to believe in allow themselves to be totally outmaneuvered and outclassed by the Cons. If the Dems had any brains (balls notwithstanding) they should have shut Lieberman down before he could open his 'upper anus'.

(I'd *love* to expand the 'Con' to conservative, but lately, it expands most logically to 'Convict')

and from the house, a few weeks ago, bush/cheney/warparty get to say:

“even the democrats have said that iran is pursuing nuclear weapons and has a president who’s a genocidal maniac”

more details here (my comment at fdl):

i am so glad to see the A list bloggers taking this seriously. thank you, thank you, thank you.

i spoke with my rep. (jim mcgovern) last week about h.con.r.21 - and he had no idea that the translations they were using were controversal (a mistranslation according to juan cole).

i hope the attention you are bringing to the issue will serve to educate a few of our congress critters.
