Plot On Army Base Thwarted

Interesting news report out of New Jersey today that will certainly be fodder for the wingnuts. From the Post:

Federal authorities have arrested six New Jersey men for allegedly plotting an attack against the Fort Dix military base, federal officials said today.

Of the six, four are from Albania, one from Jordan and one from Turkey. One is an American citizen and three 'appear' to be here illegally.

The were arrested for an attempt at "storming the base with automatic weapons and attempting to kill as many soldiers and other personnel as possible."

Officials described the men as 'Islamic militants,' however they offered no 'details to explain that characterization' and that the men while sharing an ideology with militants worldwide, 'did not appear to have any connections with any overseas terrorist groups.'

All cases like this must be taken seriously, but when are these insignificant cases going to stop being blown out of proportion? Are we that ruled by fear?

"Charging document filed in federal court in Camden yesterday and unsealed today portray an ambitious and cold-blooded -- but somewhat bungling -- cadre who hoped to kill at least 100 soldiers, but also dropped training videos off at a local store to be copied, and spoke openly to a Philadelphia police sergeant about obtaining maps of Fort Dix."

Thankfully, we learn once again that all evil doers are total idiots.

Oh, yeah. For some reason the words "Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group" suddenly popped into my mind. Totally without relevance, of course....

...was CIFA. I guess now it's a bit clearer why DoD was gathering force protection intelligence domestically (if less than spectacularly competently).

You know, the guy out in front saying things like, "Islamic extremists", "jihadists", “inspired” by al Qaeda, and that the nation had just "dodged a bullet," maybe "many bullets". I though it interesting at least:

from usdoj.gov:

In 1987, Mr. Christie joined the law firm of Dughi, Hewit & Palatucci of Cranford, New Jersey. In 1993, Mr. Christie was named a partner in the firm. Mr. Christie specialized in securities law, appellate practice, election law, and government affairs. Mr. Christie is a member of the American Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association and was a member of the Election Law Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Mr. Christie is in his fifth year as the chief federal law enforcement officer in New Jersey. His Office includes 139 attorneys with offices in Newark, Trenton and Camden. Mr. Christie also served in 2004 and 2005 as one of seventeen U.S. Attorneys on Attorney General Gonzales' Advisory Committee.

From the Nation:

1O. Were you aware that, on a time line paralleling the 2OO6 U.S. Senate campaign in New Jersey, a U.S. Attorney in that state, Chris Christie, began issuing subpoenas aimed at raising questions about the ethics of Bob Menendez, the incumbent senator who was seeking reelection that fall? Are you aware that Christie, a Bush "pioneer" fund raiser and former Republican elected official who has been talked about as a likely Republican statewide candidate, took the rare step of commenting about those subpoenas at the same time that Republicans were mounting an expensive television advertising campaign designed to attack Menendez's ethics and highlight the issues raised by Christie? Are you aware the inquiry has gone nowhere since Menendez was reelected? Why, Mr. Attorney General, do you think the urgency ended with the end of the election cycle?

while we settle back to watch the White House and its talking heads spin this.

Of course, they're Over Here too. And good, old-fashioned police work is the best way to find them (seasoned with a dash of luck). All the soldiers and high-tech firepower are completely ineffective against in-house schemes like this.

when they attack the people over here we're sending over there to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here.

Family of Macedonian Albanians in US Terror Plot Shocked
BIRN

10 05 2007 Debar_ Family members of three Macedonian Albanians accused of plotting a terrorist attack against the Fort Dix barracks in United States said Friday they were shocked by the news.

Dritan, Sahin and Elvir Duka, the three Albanians arrested on Monday for plotting an attack on a military base, are all from the village of Spas, near the town of Debar, a predominantly ethnic Albanian town close to the border with Albania. The brothers left Macedonia 22 years ago and never came back.

Elez Duka, a cousin of the three, who owns an internet café in Debar, told Balkan Insight that "what has happened is unacceptable”. ”We are a family that has never had any problems," he said. "If this is true, nobody could support them for what they did."

Naze Duka, the grandmother of the three brothers, visited them in the US in October 2006. "They were working non stop and were coming home after work. I cannot believe they have done something like this - America is feeding us," she said.

The mayor of Debar has also said he was dismayed after he saw reports. "We live from the support of our immigrants. Almost every family has the US flag next to the Albanian flag. There are some 15,000 local people in America," Argtim Fida told Balkan Insight.

While yesterday Pristina officials and NGOs rushed to condemn the alleged plot and express Albanian loyalty to the US, Skopje officials seemed unruffled by the fact that three of the suspected terrorists were from Macedonia.

"Macedonia stays firmly on course in the global war against terror. We strongly condemn this act as well as all acts of terrorsim," government spokesperson Ivica Bocevski told Balkan Insight. Macedonia is an US ally with troops deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"We condemn terrorist plots against the US which has proven to be the biggest partner of the Albanians. We hope this case will be treated as an isolated one, and will not create a negative image of Albanians in Macedonia. We do not expect that this will affect Macedonia`s relations with the US as, at the end of the day, we are talking about members of one family that did not live here for a long time," Ermira Mehmeti, spokesperson for the Albanian opposition party, the Democratic Union for Integration, told Balkan Insight.
