7 Chinese Kidnapped In OgadenLooks like China's long-term plans to woo Africa just hit a speed bump. (And speed bumps in Africa can be prickly.) From the IHT (via The Agonist Newswire):
As many of you know I was in Ethiopia early this year. I saw at least two hundred Chinese road workers, engineers and military officers working on the roads, mostly in the Blue Nile Gorge, but also just outside Dessie. The Chinese are making a serious play for Africa. But there is a catch: when you are a great power you have to be able to protect your investments. What happened the day before yesterday is a perfect example of why. I wonder if this will be a spur for the Chinese to create a national ability to project power or are they content to play along under our security umbrella for the time being? Regardless this is a wake up call for the Chinese. Sean Paul Kelley April 25, 2007 - 10:59pm
