John Edwards Bowing To Winger Pressure?

Is John Edwards going to bow to winger pressure and fire one of his campaign staffers? Is Edwards going to fire his campaign staffer simply because the a documented bigot objects to her political views? If so, then Edwards is in for a very rude surprise from the netroots.

Politicians represent us, the netroots and our interests. If they are not penalized for failing to do so then we have no reason to complain when they cave. This isn't about the media, per se, it's about getting our politicians to stand up to the media and get our message out. Contact the Edwards Campaign here and please be polite.

His Iran comments were a pretty good indicator he was going to play it safe in more ways than one.

Update: Salon is reporting, in a heavily conditioned way, that Edwards has fired the bloggers in question. What a coward. If a guy can't take a little heat for a couple of bloggers then just think about how craven he'll be in the White House?

Update 2: Crooks and Liars has a nice little flashback for old Mr. Donohue.

Update 3: More here. Lotsa good videos of teh old bigot Donohue. This, as Lesley notes in her comment, is what this whole brou-ha-ha is about: "If they’re fired, I will take that as an indication that Edwards is more interested in pandering to his opponents than his supporters and look around for another candidate to support."

Update 4: Last point: this is a huge opportunity for Edwards. He could use this to hold a press conference and expose Marcotte's and McEwan's attackers for the bigots they are. Have his staff do a little research, read out some of the LGF and Malkin, posts during the press conference. Point out the link between the two Morans--the one at ABC who is a reporter for the Liberal Media and his brother whose post echoes his ABC blog post. Call Donohue out. Call the right wing attack machine out on this.

IT'S A HUGE MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO NOT ONLY SCORE WITH THE NETROOTS but to smash the right wing attack machine.

...they've been attacked for stuff that they wrote before they joined the campaign. Two thoughts:

1. Wait for the wave of "where the hell was Edwards' due diligence" stories coming on.

2. And people wonder why many of us, particularly those who have livelihoods dependent on people believing their subjective judgement worth money, stay anonymous.

Amanda Marcotte was first attacked by Michelle Malkin for deleting old, possibly offenseive posts to present a better image for the Edwards campaign. Then, when that was proven false, Malking attacked her for NOT deleting previous posts that could be taken as offensive.

Quite messed up. Of course, Donohue and others have been on the attack as well, but Malkin's logic is pretty representative.

Feministe has been following it a bit more closely:

Yeah. I am quite aware that my comments on Israel and AIPAC and some of the things I've said about America would make me a dangerous hire for an American politician, for example.

Amanda was an interesting choice. I thought so as soon as I heard her name. She says controversial things. Often. Any politician hiring her should know that and the response should have been ready.

They blew it - either they didn't do their due diligence, or they did and didn't realize what it meant.

And I hope (and assume) that Amanda pointed out to them her more controversial posts.

If Edwards is going to hire a blogger, shouldn't it be someone at least more sophisticated than Amanda Marcotte? She's kind of a joke (in my always humble opinion).

she was hired to coordinate outreach and manage edward's blog. or at least, that's how i understand things. frankly, i don't see how what she said is so important. if it is, then every single media outlet needs to fire about 1/3 of their staff, for linking, reporting, interviewing and associating with plain racists, bigots and sexists (and often worse than that) if it's not, which i really don't think it should be, there should be a discussion about the common sense reality in which people say and do things on their own time, and can still be loyal employees of those who have different opinions and views. last time i checked, very few of us were so pollyanna like that we've never cursed, made a bad/nasty joke, or otherwise said or done something that could be taken as offensive by some. this is your typical republican ploy: create a false standard, violate it blatantly, and turn up the noise machine demanding democrats answer "when they stopped beating their wives."

and it's just so sad edwards is falling for it. i expect it from the SCLM, but i'm starting to wonder why he hired bloggers in the first place, if not to ask them about how to deal with this kind of attack. are we really the only people in lefty american politics who know how to play hardball?

this one: "are we really the only people in lefty american politics who know how to play hardball?"

Yes, we are.
