Jeff Greenfield says, "I figured there was no way on planet Earth that anyone could possibly take such a presentation at face value. I was wrong." (Watch the video here.) And in that he misses the point: even if it was a joke, it was a really, really bad one. Would you ever put George W. Bush on the same screen as say, Osama bin Laden? Or maybe Saddam Hussein? Of course not, as the peanut gallery of Right-wing media bashers would erupt in a frenzy more fearsome than the 2000 Brooks Brother's Riot down in Florida. The joke is on you Greenfield.
was a reliable news source for the truth it probably would have been immediately picked up as a joke. I think it says more about the MSM then the bloggers trying to fill every 15 minutes...
feel the need to do comedy, anyway?
Greenfield's defense amounts to the Kerry 'botched joke' defense, but it doesn't wash for a couple of reasons.
First, part of Greenfield's report - dealing with Obama's name - was revisited yesterday by CNN's Whimsy Reporter, Jeanne Moos - once again in the name of 'comedy.'
Greenfield should take the reaction to this as a sign that we don't want our news outlets trying to keep up with the Jon Stewarts and Stephen Colberts of the world.
Stewart does his job well, and ends up doing Greenfield's job (political analysis) pretty well as a bonus. Greenfield, OTOH, tries to do Stewart's job and fails - and makes a mess of his own job, too.
Leave the comedy to the pros, Jeff. You work for a NEWS network.
A joke, my ass. He wanted to stir up some hatred against Obama. I can't believe these presstitutes.
Our virtues are usually only vices in disguise.
having read the Daily Howler for so long, I'm not surprised that:
1) He would write the article in the first place and 2) He would try to laugh it off as a joke when the criticism got too loud for him.
That is what the problem is the joke is. They forget the anger still carried by that. I don't doubt Obama can rise above the silliness and attempts to identify him with terrorists but, the man is very skilled in defusing this kind of stuff. It's the fact that it reeks of 2002.
