Fear and ProjectionAfter re-reading George Will's odious smear on Senator-elect Jim Webb I can't help but get the sense that Will is scared; afraid he's going to lose some of his 'almighty Washington privileges.' There is a very real whiff of fear and defensiveness in his column. Read it all, really. He's conflated and elided a great deal of facts (not opinions, or hearsay but facts). Will the Post do anything about it? More importantly will Webb? I would. Also note, upon a careful reading of the column you'll notice the timeless tactic of conservatives everywhere: they take there own faults and weaknesses, in this case, a rude president and a pompous writer, and project them onto their opponent: Webb is a boor, and a shitty writer to boot. I'm not sure what the remedy is for this behavior because it is damned effective. Awareness is a start, but I think a certain pugnacity, an aggressive and aggrieved refutation in the face of such civic breaches of faith might be a good start.
