Actions Have Consequences

Not that it really matters, and not that many people will believe Nasrallah is sincere, but today he apparently says he regrets giving orders to kidnap Israeli soldiers, which started a brief, 34 day war between Hezbollah and Israel. From Stratfor:

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah would not have directed militants to capture two Israeli soldiers if he had known it would lead to the 34-day war with Israel, Nasrallah said in an Aug. 27 interview broadcast on Lebanese television.

This just goes to show you how quickly one or two miscalculations can go utterly wrong in matters of war and peace. Now, imagine this writ large, between Iran and the US in Iraq, or the US and China in Taiwan? It's easy enough to make a choice from your gut, but crisis management? Do you feel like your current leader will make the right choice?

is where these two soldiers were when they were captured.
At first both sides said that it happened in Lebanon. Now they are saying in Israel.
What is the truth?
As I keep saying, www.sabbah.biz/mt/ for the other side of the story.

repressive governments mix administrative clumsiness & inefficiency with authoritarian tendencies.

The Israelis had been planning the war long before the soldiers were kidnapped. So really, there wasn't a miscalculation here -- if it had not been one thing, it would have been another.

Nasrallah seems to understand PR better than the Israeli leadership or the Current Occupant. He admits that he gave the order for the capture of the two soliders and accepts responsibility for the consequences.

In today's political climate, that's pretty amazing and bound to win him points with the Lebanese.

From the title "Actions have consequences" I expected you to say that Nasrallah's actions have (possibly unexpected) consequences.

Instead you seem to treat Nasrallah/Hezbollah as if they were a natural phenomenon like global warming or something.

Perry August 28, 2006 - 7:26am

Global warming is caused by mans actions, so too was Hezbollah formed. To many it is a natural occurance, much like the insurgents in Iraq. Cause and Effect.

Saudi Arabia`s Okaz said in its editorial that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah`s statements Sunday that his group would not have carried out the capture of two Israeli soldiers had the leadership anticipated the scale of the Israeli response was an important transition in 'Arab awareness.'
.
The semi-official daily added that not hesitating to admit mistakes or miscalculations is an 'awareness that could consolidate reason and establish a new phase in which the Arabs can determine their positions and build their strategies.' It insisted that Nasrallah`s admission also proves the view that warned against 'miscalculated adventures and called for reason to prevent' Israeli aggression against Arab parties. Nasrallah`s comments, the paper claimed, is linked to the Lebanese state`s call to disarm Hezbollah and in affirming the state`s sovereignty through unifying ranks.

Jordanian newspapers published full page ads by al-Kharafi Group, a Kuwaiti investment company, in which there is an open letter to President George W. Bush surrounded by graphic pictures of dead and injured children in Lebanon.
.
The message addressed to the American president said: 'We agree with you, and with all the people of the world, in your rejection of fascism. However, we believe that with one look at the pictures of the victims, those of the children and women of Lebanon from the Israeli bombardment, there is a misunderstanding in determining `who deserves to be accused of being a fascist!`'
