The Future Of the Democratic PartyThere is a fascinating and ruthless war happening within the Democratic Party. It's one largely occurring under the media radar, but one which ocassionaly erupts publicly when Dean gives Biden fodder to attack or Feingold allows Pelosi an opportunity to screw up. The results of this fight will largely determine whether the United States of America will live up to its creed or succumb to the three perilous afflictions of the American body politic which Kevin Phillips has identified. Of course the Republican party is completely divorced from the reality of this fight (why should it worry about innovation, it's on top and we all know that lasts forever). This debate isn't about DLC Democrats and the netroots having it out, although that is part of it. The debate isn't about The New Republic being irrelevant and Daily Kos becoming a new power center, although that's part of it too. And the debate certainly isn't about who's the better leader, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Russ Feingold, or Al Gore, although they're all a part of the drama. The debate is best summed up in a single paragraph from this recent profile of Al Gore in The American Prospect:
The fight is between those who are trying to use the new medium to get back in control of the old medium versus those of us who are using the new medium to get across the new message, the new politics, the new economy and the new reality. So going back to first paragraph of this post you'll see the common thread: every fight is between the new and the old in some way. Each fight also boils down to the old trying to bend the new to it's will and the new's unwillingness to be constrained forever. But make no mistake, the fight is for the soul of America.
