Yesterday Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski gave a speech at the Center For American Progress on Iraq. In that speech Brzezinski scolded Democrats about not having a plan:
What troubles me the most is not that which that I have criticized, but that which hasn’t happened. That is to say: a serious and comprehensive Democratic challenge on this subject. Democratic leaders have been silent or evasive. They have not offered an alternative to the war in Iraq. It’s easy to criticize – that was the first part of my speech. That is easy to do, although some of us did it sooner than others.
With all due respect to the former National Security Advisor, the people at the Center for American Progress and Rep. John Murtha have put forward realistic and responsible alternatives. I've read many of the position papers CAP has put out on international relations, defense issues and Iraq. What CAP, Murtha and PDA (Project on Defense Alternatives) have put forth are very responsible plans. The problem is that Democrats keep repeating (and reinforcing) the same old lines how "we need to get a plan," and "we need to get tough."
What was it that buzz-cut bleach-blond freak used to say in the 80s? "Stop The Madness!"
We do have a plan and it's a realistic, hard-nosed plan that will extricate this country's armed forces from Iraq and a strategic pause is exactly what they need to prevent their falling apart. I understand Brzezinski is trying to wake the Democrats up. But he doesn't help Democrats by reinforcing the conservative narrative that Democrats don't have a plan, are therefore weak and untrustworthy when it comes to Iraq. It's the exact opposite: the Republicans are the weak and incompetent ones. Seriously, it's been three years of incompetence, starting with the looting, the failed politically ordered, cowardly and weak pullback from the siege of Fallujah and the lack of leadership at Abu Ghraib.
Democrats have a plan and it's better than tax-cuts and treason.
I actually had a phone conversation with a former southern governor who's probably going to run for president in which I told him exactly that. I said, "Sir, please stop saying we need to get a plan. We have one. Please start talking about our plan. Go to the CAP website. Read it. Read and listen to what Murtha really said. Not what the press said he said."
We have a better plan. Let's talk about that for a change.
What it will require is that bloggers actually read it and learn about it instead of sticking to the easy stuff, like Bush lied--which he did, there was no WMD--which there was not, and why haven't we found Osama--which we haven't!
That's all important stuff. But Iraq is critical. It's essential that we sound very serious and well informed when we talk about 'our plan.' The best way to sound serious and well informed is to be both.
