"This is Such a Gift" Updated

This article in the New York Times today really is a piece of work. By quoting 5 Republicans (Paul Weyrich, Rush Limbaugh, the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, Brian Jones and Carl Forti), legitimizing such 'mainstream' news sources as Cybercast News Service and demonzing Garrison Keillor, Richard Dreyfuss and yes, you guessed it, Barbara Streisand, David Kirkpatrick creates a masterpiece of sophistry and unreality.

Where did Kirkpatrick go to 'J' school: Oral Roberts University?

Here's the 'Conservative Beat*' formula: load your article up with lots of juicy conservative insider quotes discussing how bad, evil and treasonous the Democrats are. Support the quotes with tommyrot from Cybercast News Service and Rush Limbaugh. Add a thin veneer of 'truthiness' by quoting the Wall Street Journal Editorial page (Since when did the Times start citing its crosstown rival?) and toss in the rantings of a few crazy Hollywood liberals: that's the new standard for New York Times Conservative Beat and the perfect way to make censure seem radical. What a disgrace. (Digby has more.)

Sure, Kirkpatrick did quote two Democrats: Nacy Pelosi and Russ Feingold. Of course, Pelosi 'demurred' and Feingold's quote was great, but the formula of the piece (described above) is designed to make censure (and all Democrats) look radical, treasonous and weak. Three qualities Republicans have in abundance these days.

Of course, the Republicans are past masters at projection as well, but that's a post for another day.

Feingold, lest I forget the point of this post, gets a good dig in, however, and it should have been the lead:

Mr. Feingold responded at a press conference today, saying he doubted that lawbreaking by the President would hold up as a winning issue for Republicans. "If they think that," he said of Mr. Limbaugh and other conservative commentators, "it seems to me that they're as confused about this as they are about their Iraq policy."

Bottom line: the president broke the law. Why is that so hard to accept?

Update: Apparently it's not so hard for a plurality of Americans to support the censure. Still, why so hard for the press to accept it, much less support it?

Moreover, maybe the New York Times can do a follow-up, as William Greider suggested, "go back to your right-wing sources ask them to compare the charges against Bush with the impeachment charges Republicans launched against Bill Clinton. Do they now regret putting the country through that sordid spectacle? Mightn't they want to apologize?"

Update: In the Pink Texas is worth a read.

Censure Watch

Laurie Kellman writes for the Associated Press: "Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold accused fellow Democrats on Tuesday of cowering rather than joining him on trying to censure President Bush over domestic spying.

"'Democrats run and hide' when the administration invokes the war on terrorism, Feingold told reporters."

Shailagh Murray writes in The Washington Post: "For months the Democrats have resisted calls from their liberal base to more aggressively challenge President Bush. Now a maverick Democratic senator from Wisconsin has forced his party and Congress to confront head-on the question of whether Bush should somehow be punished for secretly ordering warrantless wiretaps of U.S. citizens."

Dana Milbank writes in his Washington Post column: "At a time when Democrats had Bush on the ropes over Iraq, the budget and port security, Feingold single-handedly turned the debate back to an issue where Bush has the advantage -- and drove another wedge through his party."

Catherine Dodge writes for Bloomberg: "A Democratic senator's attempt to censure President George W. Bush over his eavesdropping authorization is getting a warm welcome from unlikely sources: the Bush White House and the Republican Party."

A Poll on Censure?

But what if the country's actually for censure? How would we know?

Could we, maybe, find out?

The Mystery Pollster blogged yesterday: "The proposal by Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) to censure President Bush over the domestic eavesdropping program crossed an important threshold this morning. It was mentioned in all the major 'mainstream' newspapers and at least two cable news networks (CNN and Fox). As such, it appears to meet the criteria that pollsters have offered as when considering whether to include a topic in national news media polls."

Third day in a row. Today I'm told the good Senator is waiting for the results of the investigation by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

I asked if there had yet been a Senate investigation run by Republicans that has been anything other than cover for Bush. Levin's aide replied, "Yes," and paraphrasing a bit here, "the Senator thinks its a good idea to wait for the results of the investigation."

To which I replied, "We will see how wise a decision that will turn out to be. 48% of all Americans think the resolution should go forward."

I've heard reports that some Senate aides are getting testy on the phone. I have to say that neither Levin's nor Stabenow's aides have been anything other than patient and cordial. Its gotta be a tough job right about now.

Feingold for President because:

America desperately needs someone with leadership qualities and Liberal values executing the office of President.

Yeah, I just don't get why they are all still so scared, and what of? I mean, this is such a juicy story, pregnant with possibilities for the 24 hour cycle. This is scandal 101, here; and the press is running away from it like it is Ebola. This is their ticket to ratings, and they are standing around with their fingers in their ears, saying,"Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalalala"
