I always loved the sound of a 12-string and spent many happy hours in the Night Owl Cafe in Greenwich Village, listening to Fred’s marvelous baritone.
BTW: The modern version of Water Is Wide is quite different from the original old Irish folksong – gonna rummage around today & see if I can find that for our amusement.
Though I love Liam Clancy’s version,
I want to post “The Pogues” grittier take on “The Parting Glass” this time.
As a past semi-professional musician and singer, I’ve heard countless versions of “The Water is Wide,” and I can say without reservation that Eva Cassidy’s is among the most beautiful and feeling versions I’ve heard. And it ain’t no schmaltz, that’s for sure. Thanks to Adrena for posting it.
I don’t know what is happening at the Agonist but I am sad about some of it. Steve, Matt, Steelweed, you gotta do what you need to do. I’ll miss the snark and comments as I have followed for the last ten years. Sean Paul too (and the brunette, always the brunette).
I’m doin my own life changes and choices, reinventing myself and reclaiming my values. It is an adventure I am looking forward to. I don’t know what I will do, just an idea about where, Nova Scotia. We’ll see what life brings and what I bring to it. Have fun and be true.
Say it with music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPEyRIy81CA
