Saudi Nuclear Weapons

strangelove1

This is a market driven event of major proportions.  It seems that Saudi Arabia purchased (or is about to purchase) nuclear weapons from Pakistan.  The Saudis “rent” troops from Pakistan to do their dirty work, now and then.  They dress them up in Saudi uniforms and get a pretty disciplined, coherent force.  Why wouldn’t they turn to Pakistan for the purchase of nuclear weapons?

Here are a couple of questions:

1) Will those who advocate attacking Iran for its potential to produce nuclear weapons also encourage an attack on a truly fundamentalist jihadist supporting Middle Eastern country – Saudi Arabia?
2)  Will te see calls for sanctions against Saudi Arabia for having nuclear weapons as we see against Iran for having the potential?

Here are two review searches to keep up on this issue:  NewsNow (search on headlines refreshed every 5 minutes; and Google news search.  Also, this from the UK.

Guardian: Does Pakistan have nuclear weapons ready to ship to Saudi Arabia? A new BBC report says they are packed and ready to go

BBC: Saudi nuclear weapons ‘on order’ from Pakistan
Saudi Arabia has invested in Pakistani nuclear weapons projects, and believes it could obtain atomic bombs at will, a variety of sources have told BBC Newsnight.

While the kingdom’s quest has often been set in the context of countering Iran’s atomic programme, it is now possible that the Saudis might be able to deploy such devices more quickly than the Islamic republic.

  • What about punishing Pakistan for selling the weapons to Saudi Arabia? Oh wait, we’ve been here before.

    • Pakistan gets away with the worst behavior. The military is perfectly capable of wiping out the Taliban but they stopped short when they initiated action a few years ago. The government is two faced and they have this “strategic depth” doctrine which entails creating low level conflict to keep India off guard.

The are two big losers in the Obama about turn on Syria and engagement with Iran (which is an encouraging move). Saudi Arabia is terrified of Iran and an Iran friendly syria due to the Shia population in the oil rich provinces. Buying a nuke is hardly sensible. Turkey is another big loser. Their PM, Erdogan, is literally melting down as evidenced by crazy public statements. I’m expecting an Arab Spring in Saudi Arabia courtesy of the U.S. and a sudden corruption scandal that forces Erdogan out. Interesting times.
