Open Secrets

Not only is the Bush Administration more closed to journalists than administrations in recent memory, now it says the media is forcing its hand, driving the "kind of insularity that the press claims they don't like."

Secretary Chertoff says in the interview, "That's having a real damaging effect." Too bad he's referring to the press, not the overreaching and seemingly ceaseless secrecy hurting public trust in the government.

So give me some evidence. Show me how any of these recent major disclosures -- secret prisons, call logs, warrantless wiretaps, financial tracking -- have made terrorists or other intelligence targets bolder, have changed their behavior, and maybe I'll say reporters should listen to you next time you tell them not to print a story.

Of course, I could say scratch that and show me how these leaks have had worse effects than the selective leaks that helped build the case for the war in Iraq, but I'm feeling generous.
