The A.P. reports that two amphibious landing vessels, Nikolai Filchenkov and Caesar Kunikov, will be heading shortly to the Syrian port of Tartus. These are not small ships. Bteween them they can carry up to 600 troops and more than 20 tanks or other armored vehicles. The Kunikov was flagship for the Russian landings in South Ossetia during the conflict in Georgia.
Tripwires against Western intervention don’t come more obvious than this. (Link Fixed).
Update Interfax is reporting that a third large landing ship, the Ropucha-Class Kalningrad, is also being sent to Syria. It can carry up to 20 main battle tanks and 200 troops, or 12 APCs and 340 troops.
