Putin orders start of Russian forces’ withdrawal from Syria

Reuters – Putin, at a meeting in the Kremlin with his defense and foreign ministers, said Russian military forces in Syria had largely fulfilled their objectives and ordered an intensification of Russia’s diplomatic efforts to broker a peace deal in the country.

“I believe that the task put before the defense ministry and Russian armed forces has, on the whole, been fulfilled. With the participation of the Russian military… the Syrian armed forces and patriotic Syrian forces have been able to achieve a fundamental turnaround in the fight against international terrorism and have taken the initiative in almost all respects,” Putin said.

But the Russian leader signaled Moscow would keep a military presence: he did not give a deadline for the completion of the withdrawal and said Russian forces would stay on at the port of Tartous and at the Hmeymim airbase in Syria’s Latakia province.

    • Not so sure about that. If Assad is pushed out as part of the peace process, Russia’s access to the Mediterranean might vanish, depending on Assad’s replacement. I can’t imagine any anti-Assad polity wanting to let Russia keep its foothold there. Russia’s access via Crimea & the Black Sea might be problematic vis-à-vis the recent antics of Sultan Erdogan.

  • Russia is not giving up Assad they learned their lesson in Libya. This a well written piece from a Russian view and not the Western way of thinking/branding.

We need to remember Russia still will have the Naval [Ed: Tempted to leave it ‘Navel 😀 ] Base and Air base with top troops protecting them. They will still provide air support to the Syrian army and weapons also food aid.

I doubt Turkey, Israel, any other country will try Russia mind set. They can reach out and touch the middle east with cruise missile if they need to.

Amerikas very own neo-cons must be foaming at the mouth they just got out played again by the chess master.

Oh well back to splitting firewood.

  • US special ops to fight alongside Turkey in Syria: report

Around 40 special operations troops will join Turks.

Politico.eu, By Brian Bender, September 16

The United States is planing to embed about 40 special operations troops with Turkish forces fighting the Islamic State in northern Syria, the Wall Street Journal reported today, citing unnamed U.S. officials.

“The joint mission will take the forces east toward the northern Syrian town of Dabiq, a symbolically significant Islamic State stronghold. U.S. special-operations forces will operate as combat advisers and generally under the same guidelines as other special-operations forces are working inside Syria,” according to the report.
