May 1: A Day without Latinos

From an acquaintance with ties to "regular" latino organizations:

May 1st will be the DAY WITHOUT LATINOS. If HR 4437 is passed: no school or work on May 1st.

Tell everyone you know not to attend school and tell your parents not to work. The movie "A Day Without a Mexican" will become real. All Latinos have to work together to make this happen to prove to everyone that the U.S. is NOTHING without us On May 1st don't even go into the streets! Don't buy ANYTHING!

Stay at home and kick it. Watch the U.S. struggle without us. May 1st will be the day the gov't loses tons of money and realizes who really runs this country. Spread the word!

To be taken with a grain of salt. Among other things, everything hinges on whether "HR 4437" is passed. Since the bill's undergone some changes already in the Senate and is sure to go through even more changes when in Conference, it's unlikely that "HR 4437" as orginally conceived will ever see the light of day.

Those Americans sitting on the side lines watching will not appreciate this act and could very well turn alot opinion against them. If anything it might make Americans realize how many illegal immigrants there are and also might make them wonder how all the money spent on immigrants would be better put to use for Americans.

"how all the money spent on immigrants..."

I think this one for starters will go out the window. I don't think this would back-fire at all. I think what'll happen (in a properly functioning democracy) is that they'll see millions staying at home or whatever and then pass some kind of panic legislation to remedy the problem. There's so little real activism in our body politic that once it rears its head -- as it has done on this issue in the past couple of weeks -- politicians take notice and even change their policies.

That said, I'm kind of doubtful the May 1 event will happen at all -- given that the original House bill stands zero chance of getting through as originally passed.

by immigrants you are right. However in lesseer areas I think people will resent them protesting and will not appreciate demands being made by them. Hopefully things will handled by May.

Immigrant groups vow mass protests in US cities for amnesty

WASHINGTON : Pro-immigrant groups vow giant marches across the country on Monday demanding immigration reform and the legalization of nearly 12 million undocumented migrants living in the United States.

Marches have been organized in 60 cities, including here in the US capital.

Coalitions gathering groups that represent immigrants to the United States, both legal and undocumented, are trying to keep pressure on US legislators to reach a compromise on proposed reforms of US immigration policy.

The April 10 protest "has incredible importance," said Eliseo Medina, head of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and one of the organizers of the march in New York.

"The community must mobilize with one voice in a disciplined manner, in a peaceful but firm way," he said.

On Monday "we march in the streets, but we will also march to the voting booth in November," during key mid-term elections, said Medina, adding that not all immigrants were undocumented and that many will vote.

In Los Angeles, Miami and other cities, the Catholic Church has called its members to join in the protests.

On Friday the US Senate failed to approve compromise legislation before their two week April recess that would have allowed millions of undocumented workers to normalize their status.

Organizers hope to top the late March protests in 44 US cities, in which they said 1.5 million people took to the streets.
