“Kill them all. For the Lord knows them that are His.” That phrase was infamously ascribed to Abbot Arnaud Almaric during the Albigensian Crusade, when troops under the Inquisitor-Abbot’s command put to the sword almost 20,000 men, woman and children.
The phrase resonates in the Obama administration’s drone strike policy, in which the President personally “approves lethal action without hand-wringing”. In a NY Times piece on Obama’s “Kill List”, we read that:
Mr. Obama embraced a disputed method for counting civilian casualties that did little to box him in. It in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent.
Which is partly how John Brennan can stand up on his hind legs and claim that there have been no civilians killed by signature strikes when alternate counts and individual reports show innocents slaughtered.
Read the whole of the NYT’s piece, which is informed by interviews with “three dozen of his current and former advisers” and is thus clearly a White House sanctioned puff piece designed to show how tough Obama is to the electorate. I shuddered, not once but several times, at the details of this Albigensian war on terror.
