Saturday NYC March: Peace,Justice Democracy- Backbone vs Chain Gang

(snips from Common Dreams)
broadcast semi-live (at times) from WBAI:-)

The Backbone Campaign will launch the "Bush and Co. Chain Gang" at the Saturday, April 29 March for Peace, Justice and Democracy in New York City. The march begins north of Union Square at noon and proceeds south along Broadway to Foley Square. The Backbone Campaign will also parade its giant, 70-foot puppet of a human spine, festooned with slogans of an interlocking progressive agenda.

The newly-created Chain Gang features giant puppet heads of Dick Cheney, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and President Bush, wearing black-and-white-striped prison uniforms. The Chain Gang project is intended to provide a humorous face to serious calls for Bush Administration accountability.

The Backbone Campaign, a leader in the use of political theater as metaphor and spectacle, is a grassroots effort to embolden citizens and elected officials to stand up for progressive values. The organization provides creative tools for citizens and the progressive movement to expand the political dialogue. The backbone symbolizes an interlocking agenda, a coalition, and the personal courage necessary to fight for a future worthy of our children.

Just fyi - there is none of the usual live coverage, other than cellphones at the march.

"WBAI" is a current example of the left eating the left, with coups, charges of Pacifica censorship, staff walkouts etc

There's nothing going on in NC today that's bigger in size than this, but no online versions of NYC-based newspapers are carrying anyting but the bare bones AP newswire.

If it happened in Egypt it would be all over google. Talk about no spine...

a local news story all day.

!I guess this is one of events where radio or TV just work better than the internet- though Fox has a story out on their site very early on about "how today's marchers envy the immigration protesters for their wider support"

Though today's march was certainly rag-tag in the ideologies represented, I don't think Fox is correct- but at least they had a local story.:-)

Those are pretty well done except for the Bush head. When I first saw it, I was thinking...."why do they have an Ollie North there ?". The Rumsfeld one is the best.

hi Maddog- good to see you're on the new site :-)
I think it's because Bush's been cutting his hair shorter and shorter (along with much of the country) He now has the haircut that Ollie used to in the old pictures so the resemblance is greater!

It was quite striking the other day when W was pictured in a chow line with recruits

I just happened to find this funny - NYC protest protocol from NY1

The NYPD is asking protesters to arrive early and to join the march from streets to the north. ... For more detailed information, log on to www.nyc.gov/nypd.

Thousands march in mass anti-war rally in New York

NEW YORK - Thousands of anti-war demonstrators marched in New York on Saturday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq and vowing a summer of protests ahead of mid-term elections in November.

The protesters included national figures like civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon and the prominent anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan.

The mass rally was organised by a broad coalition of groups representing veterans, trade unions, military families, environmentalists and civil rights activists.

"This is what democracy looks like," said chief organiser Leslie Cagan, national coordinator of the anti-war lobby United for Peace and Justice.

"We are here to send a message to the White House and the Congress that we must end this war now, bring our troops home and also end the attack on our civil rights at home," Cagan said.

While the main focus of the march was Iraq, Cagan said the rally was also aimed at protesting any plans for military intervention in Iran and at setting the domestic political agenda ahead of the congressional elections later in the year.

"Today we march, tomorrow we organise and in November we vote," Cagan told cheering supporters.
