Clinton tipped for secretary of state

Ian Munro | New York | November 14

Sydney Morning Herald - Speculation is mounting in the US that Hillary Clinton could take control of the country's foreign affairs policy as president-elect Barack Obama considers her for his secretary of state.

Senator Clinton lost the Democratic Party nomination to Senator Obama, but she is understood to be a strong candidate for foreign affairs, along with the decorated war hero Senator John Kerry.

The former first lady flew to Senator Obama's home city of Chicago on Thursday on what her office described as "personal business". The New York senator is reportedly in strong contention for the role.

Both NBC News and The Washington Post reported that Senator Clinton was in the running for the most senior diplomatic post, and the current affairs website Politico.com reported that several senior advisers to Senator Obama were supporting her for the position. The Obama camp declined to confirm the reports.

it is all rumours. I wonder if this is all a circle jerk of reporters repeating bloggers repeating so called insiders... Since Obama is saying nothing and telling everyone else to say nothing makes me think it is others just 'making' news. How is that for cynical? :D

I doubt that the No Drama Obama team is the source for this. "Those who know aren't talking, those who are talking don't know".

... a pretty secure Senate seat for one or two terms as SecDef. I'd be surprised if she took it even if it is offered. Not sayin' she wouldn't, just that I don't expect her to.

senate is where she can address the domestic problems she is most concerned about. I have no doubt that she would be an excellent SoS or head of HHS, but wonder if she would feel she is too much under others control.

Obama's disciplined message springs several leaks

By Steven Thomma | McClatchy Newspapers

CHICAGO — With a penchant for secrecy finely honed during a disciplined campaign, President-elect Barack Obama may well have thought he could continue to control his message as he's hunkered down behind closed doors since he won the election.

Fat chance. There are leaks, leaks and more leaks.

From the immediate accounts about what Obama and President George W. Bush talked about in their private White House meeting to this week's revelations that Obama's considering Hillary Clinton for secretary of state, there's been no shortage of unofficial news about what Obama's doing.

Some is wrong. Some may be right. Much of it is intended to force the president-elect's hand or limit his options. Almost all of it finds its way into print, onto television or onto the Internet.

The rumors, leaks, gossip and speculation are rapidly filling the vacuum left by Obama's quick post-election pivot from public rallies and speeches to back-room meetings in the well-guarded privacy of a nondescript federal office building in downtown Chicago.

Since he won the presidency Nov. 4, Obama has been largely invisible to the public.

He visited the White House, but said nothing to reporters or the public. He laid a wreath Tuesday at a veterans memorial in Chicago but issued only a short written statement. His taped radio address Saturday will be the first time most Americans have heard his voice in eight days, since a short news conference.

Yet if nature abhors a vacuum, news media addicted to stories about Obama and a Washington culture that feeds on information REALLY hate a vacuum.

"
We have had eight years of "news" from "government officials", "un-named sources", "anonymous sources", " people not authorized to speak for..." and, so on, and so on, and so on.
Continuity of these speculations, labeled "news", is not change I will believe in.

We can dream can't we? :) I look forward to the day I can go back to main blogs and get news, real news and not lots of idle speculation coached in words of a close adviser told me... The day when blogger bitched about the papers, media.. shoving their opinions as fact done our throats. Instead now we get bloggers shoving their opinions as fact down our throats. LOL it all seems so incestuous :)

h/t The Seminal: Does Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State Make Sense?

Tina November 15, 2008 - 8:00am

this gives me reason to rejoice if she's appointed. She might be allowed to speak her own mind.

The problem is that Hillary has her own power base and, much like Colin Powell in the Bush Administration, she can’t be fired. If she goes rogue, the Obama Administration would have to grin and bear it. For her to be happy in the job, Hillary Clinton will need to be a major player in not just promoting the Obama foreign policy but also in creating it. There is an honest question about how well she would represent a policy that she may disagree with.

Interesting though, in her Foreign Policy speech Clinton discussed practically the whole world but did not mention Israel, Palestine, and Palestinians once. This attests to the power of American Jews who have placed such fear in the minds of politicians that they can't even bring themselves to discuss the most volatile region in the world: "The Middle East". I believe the large and powerful pro-Israeli lobby will keep a tight leash on Hillary if she is the Sec.of State ... but I hope she will be strong enough to break it, for the sake of us all.

The Guardian, By Ewan MacAskill, November 18

Washington - Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.

Obama's advisers have begun looking into Bill Clinton's foundation, which distributes millions of dollars to Africa to help with development, to ensure there is no conflict of interest. But Democrats believe the vetting will be straightforward.

Clinton would be well placed to become the country's dominant voice in foreign affairs, replacing Condoleezza Rice. Since being elected senator for New York, she has specialised in foreign affairs and defence. Although she supported the war in Iraq, she and Obama basically agree on a withdrawal of American troops.

Clinton, who still harbours hopes of a future presidential run, had to weigh up whether she would be better placed by staying in the Senate, which offers a platform for life, or making the more uncertain career move to the state department.
