Was he responsible, among other achievements , for the BBC News site overhall that cut the average required mental age of the reader to 6 years old and raised the type font size to 16?

But I wonder if he took a pay cut? The Beeb was paying him $1.3 m a year.

Local stories mean nothing anyway to the Times unless they’re about Serious People.

Pay cut? Have you seen the size of the fired CEO’s payout? Its on the scale of multiple tens of millions. He will get a hell of a raise, which is one of his two reasons for going to US.

Mark Thompson is married to an American, and there was talk that he was looking for a US media job for some time.

BBC Digital is executing very well. I’ve just lived through their major scale up online for the Olympics, and I have to say that went flawlessly. The BBC is a very complicated organisation to run, with internal and external politics.

My sole issue with him is the extent of the regional expansion, contraction in London, and the extent of the capital costs involved with that.

The NYT has managed itself into a hell of a hole, a series of missteps starting with buying the Boston GLobe top of the market.

This isn’t a across the pond takeover, its New York taking over a media exec. Believe me, the NYT is a family business. The Sulzbergers must look on the Bancrofts and do everything they can to avoid that fate.
