The Explicit Connection Between Biofuels Policy and the Land Grab in Guatemala

Last week I posted some news about a violent land grab going on in Guatemala. Here is some background explanation from Annie Bird of Rights Action connecting policies that purport to fight climate change and the land grab.

On March 15, 16 and 17, thousands of Mayan Qeqchi villagers were violently evicted from 14 communities, to make way for 'for export' agribusiness initiatives, particularly production of sugar cane and African palm trees aimed at biofuel promotion.

One man was killed during the evictions and at least five people injured.
...
Today, thousands are living on the roadsides, in the Polochic Valley, in the rain - no shelter, no where to go, no food.

The violence, hunger and environmental devastation in the region is the direct result of funding from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), a regional multilateral "development" bank which issues publicly traded bonds, to a sugar cane and African plam tree company "Chabil Utzaj".

This week's mass evictions demonstrate how public investment funds and mechanisms created to curb climate change are subsidizing not only the brutalization of families and forced starvation but also contribute to climate change.

I'll have more updates from Kawok Waqlaju soon.

CABEI is a Central American brain trust. Couldn't Central American countries be the source of subsidies? Usually, subsidies are reserved for companies within your own borders...

push is being driven completely from the U.S.
Do you really think CABEI would be subsidizing this crap if there wasn't a market in American policy circles for giving money to biofuels? CABEI is the tail, American policy is the dog.

they're the bigger assholes for disenfranchising their own citizens on behalf of a foreign power. o_O

Incidentally, I'm in favor of ending all biofuel subsidies. It makes no economic sense.

Now we have to compete with the rich's cars for food?

This will end badly for all.
