BRANTFORD, ON, CANADA – Mass graves of Mohawk children have been uncovered by ground-penetrating radar at the Mohawk Institute, a residential school for Mohawk operated by the Church of England and the Vatican before its closure in 1970.
According to Rev. Kevin Annett, Secretary of the International Tribunal for Crimes of Church and States (www.itccs.org), the Mohawk Institute was ”œset up by the Anglican Church of England in 1832 to imprison and destroy generations of Mohawk children. This very first Indian residential school in Canada lasted until 1970, and, like in most residential schools, more than half of the children imprisoned there never returned. There can be no doubt that Canada’s treatment of indigenous peoples is a travesty that exerts and unconscionable negative impact on the legal, social, economic and political of these people.
However, the provocative rhetoric of Rev Kenneth Annett is both inflammatory and puzzling. What is this “International Tribunal for Crimes of Church and States ” (ITCCS) based in Brussels? Sounds like a well-established UN initiative, doesn’t it? But no. It was established in June, 2010 and its first public event was book launch by the Rev Annett last October.

Around about this point I’m starting to think this guy Annett is another west coaster who has spent far too much time on the beach.
So from whence do they/he obtain authority?
The sponsoring organizations of the ITCCS include the Templemore Forgotten Victims of Antrim in Ireland, Survivors of Clergy Abuse of Australia, The Akha Heritage Foundation of Thailand, The Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared of Canada, Against Church Terror Coalition of America, SAPED and the Cultural Foundation Native Expressions of Canada, none of whom I’ve ever heard of and I haven’t time to Google.

I think Rev Anett’s stated goals in establishing his organization are laudable and there is little doubt that “prodding with a pointed stick” is often the best course of action. But there many public and private, national and international organizations in place that are dealing with practical issues of the Rights of Children in practical, meaningful ways and financial and moral support for their activities should be dramatically increased. On its face I’m not sure the Rev’s effort should yet be included.

While Canada (and the rest of Europeans) does have a bad history re indigents, there’s something very flaky about this whole thing as it’s being portrayed.
There well may be mass graves, from epidemics, for example.

But otherwise, I believe your belief about his mental instability is unfounded. I’m sure you’ve heard of the technique ‘bedjacketing’ – the use of rumour-mongering and manufactured evidence to discredit radicals. It’s very popular with the FBI and RCMP who like to use it on whistleblowers. Annett has been subjected to a severe form of character assassination. It’s been very effective judging by your low opinion of him.
Because of the complicity of the federal government, the RCMP, and the church in this genocide, Annett’s crusade to get justice for Canada’s native people doesn’t stand a chance.
But he is getting recognition elsewhere.

Annett et al are competent to excavate and analyze any remains found? Excavation is a delicate task to assure remains aren’t damaged or contaminated – ask any archeologist.
(I’ve seen an Indian grave accidentally discovered in the process of digging a firepit – shovel went into a skull. The ‘expert’ who later examined the skeleton decided the Indian had died from a massive head wound.)
Beyond unprofessional excavation, a full-scale forensic effort would be needed to analyze anything found.
If Annett & the Mohawks don’t trust the RCMP (understandable), they should have an outside, independent group of experts do the job.
Having a few guys with shovels – undoubtedly playing to scoop-hungry news cameras – is not what I call trustworthy scientific evidence.

Canada has *lots* to answer for in its treatment of First Nations, but – Queen Elizabeth herself in person took ten kids off on a jaunt and murdered them? That’s a pretty extraordinary claim. One of the things that I’ve noted over the years is that the stuff sold by guys who look to have mental timing and headspace issues usually doesn’t pan out. One of the other things that I’ve noted is how common it is for them to try and explain away the credibility issues caused by their record of not well navigating the rocks and shoals of life with mysterious state intervention. “I want to believe” is a great basis for TV, but it has little place in analysis.

I’ve looked at the overheads from where the school was located – it’s down on the floodplain of the Grand River. The notion that one is going to walk into a complex site like that – complex both because of cultural and natural processes – and assess multiple GPR targets as mass graves in a few days, without validating them through excavation just doesn’t fly. I mean hell, all of that leaves completely aside the necessity of actually dating the graves even if that’s what they turned out to be (mass secondary burial was practiced in pre-contact Ontario).

Annett is not stupid. He and his partners have already assembled an archaeological team to do a professional study of what’s being uncovered. He states that “We hope to have a preliminary report issued before the new year once we have samples and other evidence analyzed forensically.”

The concrete facts, however, are that Annett has had to fight against three humungous societal institutions, namely: the federal government, the RCMP, and the church. Annett’s enemies are many; they have a lot to hide and are powerful. Their numerous attempts to thwart his goal of achieving justice for the native Indian people of Canada are well documented.

Annett is not licensed to conduct archaeological excavations? The UBC anthropology program includes a number of archaeological studies: basic and advanced. As well, the unique knowledge of anthropologists about skeletal biology is useful for solving crime cases involving human bones
