"Let Women Die on the Floor"

“Pro-life” Paul Ryan co-sponsored a piece of legislation last year that would permit hospitals to turn women away from emergency rooms rather than perform life-saving abortions. Further, the legislation, which actually passed in the House, would allow hospitals to refuse to refer the woman to another hospital able and willing to do the procedure:

Current law states that any hospital that receives government funds is required to provide emergency care for anyone. If a hospital is affiliated with a religious institution that refuses to provide abortion care under any circumstance, they’re legally required to transfer the patient to a hospital that will. But the measure Ryan cosponsored would remove that obligation, leading opponents to criticize the bill for letting women “die on the floor.”

Kate Sheppard at Mother Jones provides details of other draconian anti-abortion bills that Ryan has actively supported, either as a co-sponsor or with his vote.

Of course he would codify this. He’s got his baseline in place, life begins at fertilization.

It’s a long time until election day. Ryan will have to deny everything that the zealots love about him. Mitt will have to deny that he’s not Ryan. It’s corrosive.

Of course, there are other issues like the survival of the species, the wacky Obama Empire Project, and getting around to locking up some Wall Street crooks. But nooooo, we’re stuck with this misanthrope (that would be Ryan).
