Good For Dodd

I often say that of the top three candidates, Edwards is my favourite.

But out of the others, the Dark Horses, Dodd is someone who has been winning my regard, time and time again, by being on the right side of issues and having the guts to do something about it.

Today Dodd's put a Hold, in the Senate, on the FISA bill. That won't, by itself, stop the bill, it will certainly slow it down. It's tempting to give in to cynicism and say he's just doing it for political reasons, but Dodd's been very consistent on civil liberties issues and I believe he's mainly doing it because he genuinely believes it's the right thing to do.

Good for Dodd. And for the record, if Dodd breaks out of the pack and appears to have a chance to win the nomination, I would be more than happy to endorse him -- not just based on this stand, but on his broad policy platform.

I haven't heard much from him, but what I have heard has been great.

Actually, who cares if he's putting a hold on the FISA bill for political reasons? I sure hope he's acting for political reasons, as well as out of the belief that this is the right thing to do. I hope he has a strategy.

and show some support, if that appeals to you.

Whether he gets anyone's endorsement or not, he is at least doing the right thing.

Hear hear.
Dodd has consistently shown integrity and a willingness to fight for democracy. He's increasingly becoming one of the small minority in the Senate who actually still believes that America is a better place with the rule of law, checks on state power, and basic civil rights for all citizens.

A little off topic, but for those environmentalists out there note that Dodd is also the only leading candidate in support of a carbon tax. A carbon tax could potentially have the greatest effect on carbon emissions of any one policy implemented. Al Gore recommends a carbon tax. The problem, of course, is that "tax" is a four-letter word in Washington. Good for Dodd embracing a carbon tax anyways, and good for Dodd for placing a hold on the FISA bill.

I hear that Dodd is threatening to filibuster the FISA bill if it comes out of the Judiciary committee with retroactive immunity for the telecom companies. If so, I think he should start by reading The Shock Doctrine out loud on the floor of the Senate. If he gets tired then Feingold and Biden can pick up where he left off. A filibuster in this situation is the minimum reason that the Democrats were elected to office last November. It's about time we are seeing some action.
