How The Black Panthers Taught the NRA to Love Radical Gun Rights (AUDIO)

Via On the Media:

We’ve become accustomed in the past 20 years to seeing the issue of guns in America broken down into two camps: gun control advocates — led by police chiefs and Sarah Brady — and the all-powerful National Rifle Association. Bob talks to Adam Winkler, author of Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms In America, who says there was a time, relatively recently, in fact, when the NRA Supported gun control legislation, and the staunchest defenders of so-called “gun rights” were on the radical left.

  • The Black Panthers did indeed completely freak out the right and moderates when they were photographed at the California state capital building with rifles.

However, Saul Alinsky remarked about the Black Panthers, it is just idiocy to say all power grows out of the barrel of a gun when the other side has all the guns.

Excellent piece. I’ve also heard it said, though not sure if it was Winkler though it seems to align with what he’s saying, that gun rights were part of protecting blacks from ill treatment after slavery was ended. I believe it was something out of one of his books. The article alluded to it in the quick read I gave it.

Open carry is still an issue that gets a fair amount of attention from some folks. I personally think the open carry nuts should just get a concealed carry permit and stop egging on law enforcement which seems to be their intent. Frankly if I see a gun carried in the open, unless of course I’m in a bush atmosphere, it makes me a little nervous.
