What are your favorite holiday songs? Post a direct Youtube link in comments and mgt will handle embedding. Seasons greetings from everyone at The Agonist!
Parts two and three of the Holiday Jukebox are up too.

Hey folks just an FYI: YouTube links no longer work in comments for non-editors, even if you post the embed code — sorry. Just put the direct URL (eg, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKIUCjbh_Q4 ) and an editor will embed ASAP.
Doug, feel free to repost and I’ll be happy to embed.
Last night I saw Cherish the Ladies, live and local!
Rise Up Shepherd.
For traditionalists, before Crosby.
Amazing lights
And at the opposite end of the spectrum…
The Bing and Dave Show.
Ave Maria Callas
The oldest known Christian song.
Cherish The Ladies sang this last night.
I was the only person in the room singing it in Latin – amazing considering I learned it about 65 years ago and never studied Latin.
Sentiments a bit older than Christian in origin.
The take Steve posted with the more common melody is fabulous,
and really gets at the wintry solitary repetitive heart of the song-
but this one- Steeleye Span and an alternate melody- is lovely, too.
Thanks for that one…I thought I’d heard all of Steeleye’s stuff, but I missed this.
Change it UP!
Here’s a little bit of holiday cheer for you: a guy walked into my wife’s Denny’s today and insisted on settling every customer in the place’s bill and tipping all the waitstaff. Over $250 all told. He said he was “paying it forward, Jayden style” and walked out.
There’s an old custom in Ireland:
“Christmas Eve, comin’ on night, wax candles – the length of your arm – are lit by the man-of-the-house in every window.
All the night long and not one of them quenched before First Mass on Christmas morning.
Tis to light the Mother of God and she in her need”.
– Maurice Walsh
What Child Is This?
1. Guilty pleasure- Elvis: “Blue Christmas” – without the smirking video but with a single, suicidal comment underneath …
2. Pleasure, period – Elizabeth Grummer sings : “Es ist ein Ros`entsprungen”(“Lo how a rose e’er blooming”).
From the ’50′s, the simplest really good version of this simple song I could find.
From my friends the Invincible Czars:
Boney M. Marys Boy Child /Oh my Lord…
Not explicitly a holiday tune, but makes for a feel-good sing-a-long nonetheless:
