Lamont vs Schlesinger: a no-brainer

This is what the Dems are up against in CT:

In April 2006, Schlesinger announced his intention to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Joe Lieberman, with a pledge to spend $500,000 of his personal funds on the campaign.

Schlesinger has received strong criticism for his gambling at Connecticut casinos under the alias "Alan Gold". He is accused of using the alias to avoid detection as a card counter, while Schlesinger maintains he only used the alias to protect his privacy as a public official. (Card counting is not an illegal activity, but many casinos exercise their right to remove card counters from their businesses.) It was contended that the scandal would jeopardize Schlesinger's latest candidacy for office as it was suggested by Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell that he should consider withdrawing [1]. State party chairman George Gallo said he felt Schlesinger "cleared the air" after he gave a press conference after the story broke, and said that he had not asked Schlesinger to step aside. [2] Thus far, Schlesinger has said that he will refuse to fold, which will keep him on the Republican line on the November ballot despite any party opposition. On July 21, the Hartford Courant reported Schlesinger had been sued twice by New Jersey casinos for gambling debts, but had settled out of court, paying back both debts with interest.

He supports a campaign program of immigration, tax, social security, Medicare, and spending reform. He is a self-described "moderate-conservative"; among other issue stances, he opposes affirmative action and amnesty for illegal immigrants, and, while he says he is otherwise pro-choice, supports mandatory parental notification before a minor can have an abortion.

Anyone see a problem in November?

but it's not out of the realm of possibility, I guess.

Most of the repubs I know have been so sick of Lieberman for so long, they may (I hope) abandon all hope in this race. The ever-more-miniscule hard-core types will pull the party lever no matter who is on it; the quietly ashamed centrists and moderates might (I hope again) vote for Ned on the basis of Iraq alone.

I agree with Don. I get the feeling that Republican voters will go heavily for an independent Lieberman, while some unknown fraction of Dem voters will vote the man rather than the party.

The challenge for the CT Democratic party and its GOTV effort will be to convince Democrats to vote for their party's ideals. It will be a hard fight.

...actually capable of successfully counting cards? Sounds like one of those things I look for in people, like being good at bridge. Now, judging from the fact that he's sticky about paying his gambling debts, he may not be all that successful at the card counting thing, but were one capable of carrying it off, the technique's hardly an indictment.

seems to be pissing people off the most at the moment. That and his on-again, off-again candidacy and a complete (so far) lack of an agenda and a disinclination to stick his head up out of the foxhole.

But I'm with you--extracting money from casinos is a virtue. ;)

a weird democrat to a weird independent in the Democratic Party.

Lamont might have been vague in his campaign, because it might be that he doesn't intend to win the election with the same causes. I wish he has something more to offer or he might encounter Kerry-disease (where is the content?). His campaign content must be more in the right/center to squeeze Lieberman the last time.
