Straight of Hormuz--take care not to get sunburned

Those thinking a mighty American carrier group would have a cake walk should Iran decide to close the straight of Hormuz, should read this.

Seems Iran's bluster might be backed by a real threat.

...over seven years old, right? Summer Pulse was the proof of concept on surging 7 aircraft carriers in July of 2004.

Be way more concerned about the Iranian 802/803 systems that have been coming online - they assert that they are producing them indigenously, in significant numbers. The number of SS-N-22s held in Iranian stores is likely very limited, given the comparatively small numbers produced. 802/803 systems strike me as being much more suitable to their strategy. Not as sexy as this sort of "OMG wonder weapon, run in circles, scream and shout" stuff, but effective in a range of use scenarios that fit well with established Iranian conventional and unconventional tactics.

What I do know, is that the straight of Hormuz is narrow, close to Iranian shore which is mountainous and provides cover.

If they start taking pot shots at oil tankers, the straight will effectively be closed.

..."how closed?", "for how long?", and "what else will the western forces take the opportunity to hit if they move to close Hormuz?". It's simple to say that the Iranians can close Hormuz, but the reality is that they can't keep it closed in the face of determined opposition, and if they play that card they very likely lose all progress to date on the nuclear file. Given that this would allow them to double down on weaponization, they may think this is a worthwhile exchange but it's worth keeping in mind that forces are frequently more strategically useful when not committed to battle.

... that we would take the opportunity to pull down quite a few assets and essentials should we need to open the Straight ... Iran is more isolated by the day, it seems ... Hormuz wouldn't be closed for long and a high price exacted ... I don't believe them to be that irrational ...

They would be blocking their own oil exports. Sort of like sitting on the branch you saw off.

to embargo Iranian oil, they already will be in a state of collapse.

Comes a point when people say fuck it and spread the misery.
