Rain

The weekend brought rain area-wide, two inches, mas o menos, of the slow soaking variety.

We planted 160 acres of oats and overseeded 160 acres of hay fields with winter rye just before the event. I know a few others that took the same chance and I bet they're glad they did.

I can't tell you how nice it was to see trees on the verge of death get a drink. I'm sure it's too late for some, but others will live to see another day, good Lord willing.

It's too late to make hay but the remaining cattle in our region should have green pickings for a while.

Pecan harvest draws near. The crop is small, but the nuts we do have appear sound. I suspect they will be expensive this year due to short supply.

From the sound of things it was just in time for many of you.

My brother in Las Cruces should be harvesting his pecans about now, too. He always sends me a few pounds which I turn into pies, since he knows I can't find a good one North of the Mason-Dixon Line. I alternate between different recipes, so if you know of any good ones, I'd appreciate adding to my cookbook.

Thanks for the update, Don. Been thinking of you as Sean was posting about the hellish weather in Texas this summer. Hopefully, your past efforts to fill all the larders will get you through this coming winter.

when the rain came through. It started out with biblical torrents and gusts that tried to uproot the tent or collapse it. There followed something like eight hours of steady rain. If the previously empty cups were to be believed, we got three to four inches all told.

The festival I was attending was pitched into chaos, but I could not have been more pleased.
