Re van with all those dead people. There was eyewitness embed RIGHT THERE. The commander at the spot ordered warning shots, no warning shots were made. Eventually van got too close and had to be destroyed. Commander was furious.
This is eyewitness account by fairly disinterested observer, and cannot be refuted by mere speculation.
Earlier report also had a woman driving the van. In any case the most likely case is that the driver's family was in the van and would die if he or she blew up the checkpoint. This would need to be proven false before entertaining some cleric's speculations.
